CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (3/7/08) -- Claiming five All-Americans for the 20th straight season, including three remaining in contention for individual championships, the Augsburg College wrestling team stands in third place after the first day of the NCAA Division III National Championships on Friday at the U.S. Cellular Center.

Augsburg stands in third place with 45.0 points, behind leader Wartburg (Iowa) with 77.5 points and second-place Wisconsin-La Crosse with 55.5 points. Wartburg has all nine of its wrestlers remaining in competition, with six in championship contention; Wisconsin-La Crosse has six wrestlers remaining in contention, including four in the championship bracket. Coe (Iowa) and Delaware Valley (Pa.) are tied for fourth with 44.0 points; Coe has five wrestlers alive and four in championship contention, while Delaware Valley has four wrestlers alive and three in championship contention.

The tournament concludes on Saturday (3/8) at the Five Flags Center. Saturday's opening round begins at 10 a.m., with championship semifinals, wrestlebacks and consolation placing matches. The championship finals are slated to begin at 7 p.m.

Augsburg 149-pounder Willy Holst (SO, Prescott, Wis.), a transfer from the University of Minnesota, earned All-American honors for the first time as an Auggie with a dominating performance on Friday. In his opening round, Holst pinned Erik Smith of Wilkes (Pa.) in 4:21; in the Friday evening session, Holst used five takedowns, two near-falls and 3:21 of riding time to claim an 18-2, technical-fall victory over Johnason Quist of Luther (Iowa). Holst is now 30-2 on the season, and has a team-high eight technical falls on the year.

Seth Flodeen (JR, Cannon Falls, Minn.) earned All-American honors for the second straight season with two victories at 125 pounds on Friday, a 14-0, major-decision triumph over David Penny of Ohio Northern in his first match and a 5-4, come-from-behind win over Wartburg's Robert Struthers. Last year's national runner-up at 125, Flodeen led 3-2 after two periods against Struthers, but Struthers countered with a reversal with 1:24 left in the third period. However, Flodeen countered with a reversal of his own with 55 seconds left to score the win, improving to 23-7 on the year and 76-27 in his Auggie career.

Jason Adams (SO, Coon Rapids, Minn.) earned All-American honors for the first time with two victories at 141 pounds on Friday. Adams, who entered the tournament as an unseeded competitor, opened with a 9-1, major-decision win over No. 6-seed Nicholas Sanchez of Heidelberg (Ohio), and followed with a 3-2 victory over No. 3-seed Matt Kelly of Wartburg. Adams is now 30-8 on the season.

Travis Lang (JR, Bismarck, N.D.) was upset 3-1 in overtime by Nichalos Nothern of Cornell (Iowa) in the 133-pound quarterfinals, giving up a takedown with 29 seconds remaining in the first overtime session. However, Lang clinched All-American honors in dramatic fashion, scoring a 2:16 pin of Anthony Gummerson of Centenary (N.J.) in the wrestlebacks. A transfer from the University of Minnesota, Lang opened his tournament with a 13-7 win over Brandon Clemmer of Delaware Valley (Pa.). Lang is now 36-3 on the season and 73-22 in his collegiate career.

Robbie Gotreau (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) claimed All-American honors for the third straight season, rallying from a 2-1 loss to Michael Wilcox of Delaware Valley in the 184-pound quarterfinals with a 7-4 triumph over James Quinlan of Bridgewater State (Md.) in the wrestlebacks. Gotreau opened the day with a 6-0 victory over Trevor LeBlanc of Cortland State (N.Y.). He is now 28-12 on the season and 138-38 in his Auggie career.
