NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS PAGE -- CLICK HERE CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (3/8/08) -- Augsburg College will have two individuals wrestling for national titles tonight, while claiming four placewinners during the third session of the NCAA Division III National Championships on Saturday morning at the U.S. Cellular Center. Augsburg stands in third place after the third session with 81 points, behind first-place Wartburg (Iowa) with 135 and second-place Wisconsin-La Crosse with 91 points. Both Augsburg and Wisconsin-La Crosse have two wrestlers each in tonight's championship finals; Wartburg has wrestlers in six title bouts. Coe (Iowa), in fourth place with 74 points, has three wrestlers in championship finals, while Delaware Valley (Pa.), in fifth with 64 points, has one wrestler in tonight's finals. Augsburg, winners of 10 of the last 17 national titles, is aiming to finish among the top four teams nationally for the 20th straight season. Yesterday, the Auggies clinched five All-Americans, marking the 20th straight season that Augsburg has had five or more All-Americans and 22nd time it has accomplished the feat in its 26 seasons of NCAA Division III competition. At 125 pounds, Augsburg's Seth Flodeen (JR, Cannon Falls, Minn.) clinched a spot in the national finals for the second straight season, after topping top-seed Christopher Heilman of Cornell (Iowa) in the semifinals 8-2. Flodeen, who entered the tournament seeded No. 5, scored his second straight victory over a higher seed with the win. He converted a takedown and three-point near-fall to take the lead in the first period, and later scored a reversal and built 2:44 of riding time. Flodeen is now 24-7 on the season and 77-27 in his Auggie career. At 141, unseeded Jason Adams (SO, Coon Rapids, Minn.) earned a trip to the national finals in his first trip to the national tournament, claiming an 8-4 victory over Niles Mercer of Coe (Iowa). Adams, now 31-8 overall and 51-13 in his Auggie career, scored a key takedown with three seconds left in the first period, then converted a reversal and three-point near fall late in the second period to build the lead. Flodeen and Adams will wrestle for national titles in Saturday's final session, which begins at 7 p.m. At 149, Augsburg's Willy Holst (SO, Prescott, Wis.) saw his hopes of reaching the finals end with a 9-3 loss to Elliott Spence of Mount St. Joseph (Ohio) in the semifinals. Holst led 3-1 in the second period, but a leg-shot attempt turned disastrous, as Spence scored a takedown and a three-point near-fall to take the lead. Holst responded with a 2-0 wrestleback victory over Matt Mauseth of Wisconsin-La Crosse to reach the third-place match. In that match, Holst dominated again, scoring an 18-6 victory over Aaron Cook of Buena Vista (Iowa). Holst built an 11-3 lead after one period on the strength of four takedowns and a three-point near-fall, then claimed a reversal and two more takedowns, plus 3:58 of riding time, to score the win. A transfer from Division I Minnesota, Holst finished this season 32-3 and is 46-8 in his collegiate career. At 184, Robbie Gotreau (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) capped his career with a 6-1 decision over Gabe Youel of North Central (Ill.) in the third-place match. Gotreau took advantage of two takedowns, an escape and 2:58 of riding time to earn the win. The 33rd wrestler in Augsburg history to earn three or more All-American honors, Gotreau finished this season with a 31-12 record and his career at 141-37. He finished fourth nationally at 174 pounds in 2006 and fifth at 174 in 2007. Gotreau reached the third-place match with two victories in wrestlebacks on Saturday. In his opener, Gotreau used a takedown and near-fall combination late in the second period to claim a 9-0, major-decision victory over Eric Fishel of Johns Hopkins (Md.), and in his second match, he scored a key takedown with 25 seconds left in the second period to claim a 3-2 win over Joshua Zabel of Wisconsin-La Crosse. At 133, Augsburg's Travis Lang (JR, Bismarck, N.D.) completed his first season as an Auggie with a fifth-place national finish. In the fifth-place match, he closed his first season in style, claiming a 56-second pin over Nicholas Nothern of Cornell (Iowa), avenging a 3-1 overtime loss to Nothern in Friday's quarterfinals. A transfer from Division I Minnesota, Lang finished this season 38-4 and is 74-22 in his collegiate career. Earlier on Saturday, Lang dominated in a 14-2, major-decision win over Jestin Hulegaard of Buena Vista (Iowa) in his first wrestleback match of the day. Lang claimed a reversal and two 2-point near falls to build a 7-2 lead after one period, then claimed a takedown, three-point near-fall and built 4:43 of riding time. However, Lang dropped a 3-1 decision to Adam Johnson of North Central (Ill.) in his second match of the day, falling to the fifth-place match. 2007 NCAA Division III National Championships --
