Top-ranked Augsburg tops No. 2 Wartburg 18-15 in Division III wrestling showdown!

WAVERLY, Iowa (1/10/99) -- The top-ranked Augsburg College wrestling team scored its third straight victory over Wartburg College in a dual meet on Sunday afternoon, claiming an 18-15 win before 1,500 fans at Wartburg's Knights Gymnasium.

Augsburg, which has won five NCAA Division III national championships, including the last two in a row, has been the No. 1-rated team in the NCAA Division III national poll for three straight seasons. Wartburg is currently rated second in Division III. Augsburg also won dual-meets over the Knights in 1998 (24-10) and 1997 (17-15), each time when Augsburg was rated No. 1 nationally and Wartburg No. 2.

Augsburg is now 4-0 in dual meets this season, while Wartburg falls to 9-1 on the season.

Each team won five individual matches in the contest, with the difference coming on Brad Fisher's (So., Austin, Minn.) third-period pin of Wartburg's Stanislav Khaitlin (So., Padres-Hanna, Israel/Kiev, Ukraine) at 133 pounds. All the other victories in the match came on three-team-point decisions.

Nik Lewandowski (So., Hastings, Minn.), the No. 1-rated wrestler nationally at 184 pounds, improved to 16-3 overall with a 4-2 overtime victory over Wartburg's Brandon Holmberg (So., Buffalo, Minn.), rated fourth nationally.

Ben Bauer (So., Faribault, Minn.), the top-rated wrestler nationally at heavyweight, remained unbeaten on the season, improving to 20-0 with a 9-6 win over Kris O'Rear (Jr., Hixson, Tenn.).

Two Auggies scored big victories over Wartburg wrestlers rated No. 1 in the nation in their respective weight classes. Darin Bertram (Fr., Herman, Minn./Herman-Norcross HS) scored a 7-4 win over Wartburg's Zac Weiglein (Jr., New Hampton, Iowa) at 125 pounds.
