RALEIGH, N.C.
(10/20/02) -- Augsburg College extended its winning streak to
four straight games and its unbeaten streak to six straight games
with a weekend sweep of games in North Carolina, beating Peace
College 4-0 on Friday night and Meredith College 1-0 on Sunday
afternoon.
Heidi Hilleren
(Jr.,
Duluth, Minn./East HS) scored her first two goals of the season
with a goal in each contest, as the Auggies improved to 10-3-1
overall.
All 10 Auggie
wins have come by shutout this season. Augsburg currently has
a streak of 383 minutes without allowing a goal, dating back five
games.
With the wins,
Augsburg reached the 10-win mark for just the fourth time in the
18-year varsity history of the program, and with four games remaining,
Augsburg still has a shot at securing the best record in school
history. The school's best record was 13-4 in 1995, followed by
11-5-1 in 1996 and 10-5-3 in 1997. With three Minnesota Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference contests remaining, Augsburg needs just one
win to tie its best conference finish ever (previous highs were
6-4 in 1995 and 6-3-1 in 1996).
Hilleren opened
the scoring in Friday's win over Peace with a goal in the 17th
minute. Millie Suk (Fr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) scored
her team-high 10th goal of the season in the 35th minute, followed
by a goal from Kristi Ofstad (Jr., Rapid City, S.D./Stevens
HS) in the 69th minute and the first collegiate goal for Melynda
Kleewein (So., Anchorage, Alaska/Dimond HS) in the 78th minute.
Suk has accounted
for 10 of Augsburg's 19 goals and 22 of Augsburg's 48 points this
season. Suk became just the fifth Auggie in school history to
score 10 goals or more in a season; the school scoring record
is 14, set by Kristin Totushek in 1997.
Laura Hoffman
(Jr.,
Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) played the first 64 minutes to
pick up the win in goal, with Sarah Sletten (Jr., Churchs
Ferry, N.D./Devils Lake HS) and Kristen Opalinski (Sr.,
Latrobe, Pa.) each seeing 13 minutes of relief. Augsburg outshot
Peace by a 33-5 margin. Amy Schneider made 17 saves for
Peace, now 1-6-3 overall.
Sunday's game
with Meredith was much closer, decided on a second-half penalty
kick by Hilleren.
Meredith (7-4-1)
outshot Augsburg 14-13, but Hoffman was up to the task, making
seven saves to claim her eighth full-game shutout of the season
and 15th in her three-year career. She is in second place on the
school's all-time record list for shutouts. Beth Petrik
holds the school record with 26 career shutouts from 1995-98.
Hoffman is now in second place in school history for single-season
shutouts; Petrik had nine shutouts in 1997 for the record.
Hoffman now
has a goals-against-average of 0.29, playing all but 36 minutes
in goal this season). In the most recent NCAA Division III national
statistics (last week), she was seventh nationally in goals-against-average.
Augsburg returns
to action on Wednesday (10/23), hosting Wisconsin-Superior at
Edor Nelson Field in the second game of a doubleheader. The men's
teams will play at 4 p.m., followed by the women's game at 6:30
p.m.
