MINNEAPOLIS
(10/26/02) -- Laura Hoffman (Jr., Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy
HS) had 13 saves of Augsburg College, and Gwen Peterson (Fr.,
White Bear Lake, Minn.) made eight saves for Gustavus Adolphus
College, as the Auggies and Gusties played to a 0-0, double-overtime
tie in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's
soccer game Saturday afternoon at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.
Gustavus outshot
Augsburg 23-18, including a 5-2 edge in the 20 minutes of overtime,
but neither team could score the "golden goal" to end
the game early. In improving to 11-3-2 overall and 5-3-1 in MIAC
play, Augsburg claimed its sixth straight shutout, extending its
streak of not allowing a goal to 563 straight minutes, dating
back seven games.
Hoffman claimed
her ninth shutout of the season and 16th in her three-year career,
tying Beth Petrik's 1997 single-season school record for
goalkeeper shutouts. She is in second place on the school's all-time
shutout record list; Petrik had 26 career shutouts from 1995-98.
Hoffman's goals-against-average of 0.26 is among the top 10 in
the nation among NCAA Division III women's soccer goalkeepers.
Gustavus is
now 8-2-4 overall and 4-2-2 in MIAC play. Peterson claimed her
first shutout of the season in goal.
Both goalkeepers
came up with key saves to preserve the draw, with Peterson making
one save in overtime and Hoffman making two. One of her overtime
saves was a sliding save on a Lindsay Parker (Sr., Plymouth,
Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) shot attempt with 4:02 left in
the second overtime. Gustavus' best shot at claiming the game-winner
came with 1:17 left, when a shot from two-time MIAC Player of
the Year Renee Beaudry (Sr., Apple Valley, Minn.) hit the
top crossbar.
The Auggies
stayed in the game despite losing two of their top players to
sprained ankle injuries in the first half, leaving them with just
one substitute for the entire second half and overtime. Millie
Suk (Fr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS), Augsburg's leading scorer
(12 goals), went down in the 25th minute and did not return, while
Kristen Lideen (Jr., Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS),
a two-time All-MIAC honorable-mention defender, left the game
with her sprain in the 43rd minute.
Britanee
Pelikan (Fr.,
Rosemount, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) had eight shots for the
Gusties, while Beaudry had six and Cynthia Lee (Sr., St.
Paul, Minn./Trinity HS) had four. Heidi Hilleren (Jr.,
Duluth, Minn./East HS) led the Auggies with six shots, while Tia
Chronis (Fr., Braham, Minn.) had five shots.
Both teams return
to MIAC action on Wednesday (10/30) at 2:30 p.m., with Augsburg
playing at St. Olaf and Gustavus playing at Bethel.
