MINNEAPOLIS
(11/1/02) -- Emily Kelsey (Sr., Savage, Minn./Burnsville
HS) and Meggie de St. Aubin (Jr., Stillwater, Minn.) scored
first-half goals for the College of St. Benedict, as the Blazers
moved into a first-place tie in the Minnesota Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference women's soccer standings with a 2-1 win over
Augsburg College Friday night at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.
With the win,
the Blazers improve to 11-2-4 overall and 8-0-2 in the MIAC, tied
with St. Thomas (10-3-2, 8-0-2) for the conference lead with one
game remaining for both teams. Macalester is in third with a 10-2-5
overall, 7-0-3 conference mark, also with one game remaining.
St. Thomas plays at Concordia-Moorhead (5-10-1, 4-5-0) on Saturday
(11/2), while Macalester plays at Gustavus (8-3-4, 4-3-2). St.
Benedict closes its season next Saturday (11/9), hosting Concordia.
Augsburg played
its final game of the season, closing the year with an 11-5-2
overall and 5-5-1 MIAC mark. The Auggies were forced to play without
their top scorer, Millie Suk (Fr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo
HS) and their top defender, Kristen Lideen (Jr., Champlin,
Minn./Champlin Park HS), who missed the game with sprained ankle
injuries from previous games.
Kelsey scored
on a rebound from a Jessica DeLoy (So., Lakewood, Colo./J.K.
Mullen HS) shot in the 13th minute, and de St. Aubin scored on
an unassisted steal and blast in the 37th minute.
Augsburg cut
the lead in the 69th minute, when Kim Glumich (Sr., Moorhead,
Minn.), playing her final collegiate game, scored on a free kick.
St. Benedict
outshot Augsburg by a 31-8 margin, including an 18-0 edge in the
first half.
Tae Ruppe
(Sr.,
Forest Lake, Minn.) made two saves for the Blazers, while Laura
Hoffman (Jr., Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) made five saves
for the Auggies. Hoffman closed her junior year by allowing two
goals in a game for the first time this season in 18 games. She
ended her year with a 0.41 goals-against-average and nine shutouts.
Augsburg finished
its season with the second-most wins in a single season in school
history, behind the 1995 team that finished 13-4 overall and 6-4
in the MIAC. The 1996 Auggie squad finished 11-5-1 overall and
6-3-1 in the MIAC.
