MINNEAPOLIS (10/29/03)
-- Emily Anderson
(Fr., Hudson, Wis.) had a goal and an assist, and Laura
Hoffman (Sr., Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) claimed her 23rd career shutout
and became Augsburg College's all-time victory leader as a goalkeeper, as the
Auggies blanked St. Olaf College 2-0 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference women's soccer game Wednesday night at Edor Nelson Field.
Augsburg closes its season with
an 11-5-2 record overall, 5-4-2 in MIAC play. Augsburg closed the season strong,
winning two games in a row and compiling a four-game unbeaten streak (3-0-1).
The Auggies' 11-5-2 overall record is identical to last year's mark, and the
squad finished above the .500 mark in MIAC play for the first time since the
1996 season (6-3-1). Last year's Auggies were 5-5-1 in MIAC play.
With one game remaining on its
schedule (at Carleton on Saturday at 1 p.m.), St. Olaf has an 8-8-1 overall
mark and 5-4-1 mark in MIAC play. With the loss, St. Olaf was eliminated from
contention for the four-team MIAC postseason playoffs.
Hoffman made four saves to record
her seventh shutout of the season and 23rd of her career, the second-most in
school history. Beth Petrik had 26 career shutouts from 1995-98. In her
62 career games in goal, Hoffman finished with a 35-22-4 record, now the most
career wins in school history. Petrik had 34 career wins in goal.
Augsburg's four seniors -- Hoffman,
midfielders Heidi
Hilleren (Sr., Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) and Kristi Ofstad (Sr.,
Rapid City, S.D./Stevens HS) and reserve
goalkeeper Sarah Sletten (Sr., Churchs Ferry, N.D./Devils Lake HS) --
closed their four-year careers with a 36-29-6 record, the second-best record
for a four-year class in school history, behind the 41-24-5 record posted by
teams from 1994-97.
Anderson scored her eighth goal
of the season in the 22nd minute, claiming a long through ball from Aili
Brom-Palkowski (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) and depositing it in the
net from 30 yards out.
Millie
Suk (So., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) tied Anderson for the team's lead in
goals with her eighth marker in the 78th minute. Anderson made a nifty move
on a St. Olaf defender, then sent a through ball to Suk, who arced a shot to
the goal from 25 yards out.
Augsburg outshot St. Olaf by
a 16-12 margin in the game. Kara Olson (So., Oconomowoc, Wis.) made two
saves for the Oles.
