Women's Soccer 8/29/08 -- Augsburg 1, Wisconsin-Stout 0 CLICK
HERE FOR GAME BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS (8/29/08) -- Whitney Holman (JR, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) scored the lone goal of the game on a free kick in the 70th minute, and goalkepper Maggie DeGroot (SR, Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West HS) set a new Augsburg College record for career shutouts with 27, as the Auggies scored a 1-0 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Stout in a nonconference women's soccer game on Friday night at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field. Holman set a free kick from 40 yards out high over the head of UW-Stout goalkeeper Taylor Randle (FY, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) for the lone goal of the game, the first of the season for both teams. "It's always nice to start the season with a win. The players worked hard in pre-season and were excited to play tonight," said Augsburg head coach Mike Navarre. "We talked at halftime about the possibility of scoring from distance, and Whitney's goal was a credit to her ability and awareness. It was an awesome strike." DeGroot had to make just two saves in the contest, as Augsburg outshot UW-Stout by a 23-10 margin, but one of her saves was a crucial one. Just a minute-and-a-half after Holman's goal, UW-Stout forward Jessica Price (SO, Woodbury, Minn.) blasted a shot from the upper left corner of the penalty box, which DeGroot saved with a sprawling, one-hand deflection. "Regardless of the shot totals, Stout took us to the limit tonight and we had to significantly increase our toughness and resolve in order to win," Navarre said. DeGroot surpassed Beth Petrik (1995-98) for the school's career shutout record with her 27th career shutout and also edged closer to the school's career record for overall victories, scoring her 28th career victory. The school record is 35 wins, set by Laura Hoffman (2000-03). "I'm so proud of Maggie. Becoming Augsburg's all-time shutout leader is a well-deserved accomplishment," Navarre said. "Maggie is quick to give the credit to the players in front of her, but she truly is a special keeper, and she showed us why again tonight with a game-saving save right after we scored." Augsburg had a solid chance to score in the first half, as Lacey Hoover (SO, Duluth, Minn./Central HS) put two point-blank shots on Randle in a scramble in the 31st minute. Nine minutes later, UW-Stout had its best chance to score in the opening frame, as a close free kick by Price sailed high. Hoover had seven shots for the Auggies, while Holman, Felicia Faison (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) and Kelsey Watsabaugh (SR, Eden Prairie, Minn./Hopkins HS) had three shots each. Randle collected 11 saves for UW-Stout in her first collegiate contest. Price and Katie Ness (SO, River Falls, Wis.) had three shots apiece for the Blue Devils. Augsburg returns to action on Saturday (8/30), hosting Northwestern-Roseville at 7 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field. UW-Stout travels to face Augustana (Ill.) on Monday (9/1) at 2 p.m. "This game took a lot out of us, so I expect to play more players tomorrow," Navarre said. "Fortunately, we have a deep team and I know that whoever plays tomorrow will do well."
