GRINNELL, Iowa (11/15/08) -- The Augsburg College cross county teams were led at the NCAA Division III Central Regional at Grinnell College (Iowa) on Saturday by Brent Haglund (JR, Fridley, Minn.), who finished in sixth place, qualifying for the NCAA Division III National Championships in the men's 8,000-meter race with a time of 25:44.4.

Haglund will compete in the NCAA Division III National Championships on next Saturday (11/22) at 11 a.m. at Hanover College (Ind.). It is his first appearance in the national championships, and Augsburg's first national meet qualifier in cross country since Dan Spiess, Stephanie Simones and Rebekah Ormsby all qualified for the national meet in 1996.

The Auggie men finished in 12th place in the team standings with 299 points, an improvement of three places and more than 100 points from its finish a season ago. The Auggie women finished in 22nd place with 591 team points, an improvement of 36 points from last season.

Victor Sanchez (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) finished in 35th place with a 26:42.2 clocking, improving his finish from last season by nearly 100 places and earning All-Central Region honors along with Haglund.

Next across the line for the Auggie men was Brian Byrnes (FY, Marshall, Minn.) and Shane Wyborny (JR, Detroit Lakes, Minn.). Byrnes finished in 27:16.2, while Wyborny finished in 27:28.2, good for 67th and 74th places respectively. Wyborny cut 30 seconds off his time from the conference championships. Running well in their first NCAA regional were Ben Rodriguez (FY, Buffalo, Minn.) and Tony Fremling (FY, Brookston, Minn./AlBrook HS). Rodriguez finished in 117th place with a time of 28:42.3, while Fremling finished in 128th place, clocking a 29:03.8. Rounding out the top seven for the Auggie men was Jason Chrudimsky (SO, Antigo, Wis.), who ran 29:47.3, good for 145th place overall.

Leading the Auggie women was Jennifer Lovering (SO, Bemidji, Minn.), who finished in 57th place with a time of 24:14.9. Other top finishers for the Auggie women were Sadie Dietrich (SR, Luverne, Minn.) and Kacie Bahr (FY, Brainerd, Minn.), who finished in 87th and 140th places, respectively. Dietrich finished in 24:57.7, while Bahr ran a 26:36.2.

Also running well for the Auggie women were Jennifer Pulscher (FY, Colorado Spring, Colo./Liberty HS) and Tori Bahr (SR, Brainerd, Minn.), who ran 27:29.1 and 27:39.2 and finished in 153th and 154th places, respectively.
