Augsburg Experience - What You Need To Know

The Augsburg Experience enables students to link the liberal arts, classroom knowledge and skills with the larger world and gain first hand, community-based experience beyond the campus. This signature element is part of Augsburg's general education requirements and underscores the college's commitment to support student engagement in the community and the world as part of their overall Augsburg education, as expressed in the Augsburg 2004 Vision document.

The Augsburg Experience can be completed through at least one of five learning options typically done in the Junior and Senior years. Ideally students will have multiple experiences across the variety of opportunities throughout their years at Augsburg. Each will strengthen their skills and reinforce their knowledge and understanding, equipping them for professional lives and service following graduation.

  • The Augsburg Experience may be done as part of the major or outside the major.
  • The opportunities may be scheduled during the academic year or summers.
  • Augsburg Experiences may be for credit or not for credit.

Augsburg Experience options:

  1. Internships, Cooperative Education (work-based experience related to your major), practicum, field work, clinical, student teaching, including domestic semester programs such as HECUA's MUST, City Arts, et al
  2. Extensive Service-Learning or Community-Based Learning Projects that may or may not be course related or embedded (Note: service-learning in a LAF course is not considered an Augsburg Experience)
  3. Study Abroad programs at worldwide program and partner university locations, ranging in length from one week to an academic year.
  4. Faculty-student research with a community/professional application component
  5. Approved special/individualized off-campus immersion experiences (domestic or international)

Ideas and suggestions from the Business Administration department...

The Department of Business Administration at Augsburg has long brought students to encounters with the real world of business. Classes in MIS, Accounting and Marketing have incorporated individual and team projects with community organizations and businesses. The Augsburg College Business Center has brought students and businesses together to solve problems and implement projects in multiple disciplines. Many Business Administration students complete one or more internships during their studies at Augsburg, giving them a work experience that is intentionally integrated with their education. Business study abroad in countries like Germany, the Czech Republic and Japan have added a global dimension and experience to a business education at Augsburg. We have long known the added value that academic learning gains when integrated with experiential learning.

Courses within major programs that may fulfill the Augsburg Experience through community-based projects:

Accounting -- specializations in Public Accounting and Managerial Accounting each require one of these courses:

  1. ACC 423 Auditing
  2. ACC 424 Internal Audit and Management

Marketing -- the major requires this course:

  1. MKT 352 Marketing Research & Analysis (speak to the instructor about an Augsburg Experience opportunity in the current term)

Management Information Systems -- the major requires both of these courses; the minor is generally fulfilled with one of these courses:

  1. MIS 376 Project Management (speak to the instructor about an Augsburg Experience opportunity in the current term)
  2. MIS 476 Information Systems Projects (speak to the instructor about an Augsburg Experience opportunity in the current term)

Non-course related Augsburg Experience opportunities:

All majors --

  1. Internships at the upper division (ACC 399, BUS 399, MKT 399, MIS 399 or INS399) coordinated through the Center for Service, Work and Learning. Refer to the CSWL Web pages at www.augsburg.edu/cswl for information about registration and opportunities.
  2. Study Abroad (including annual summer internships in Germany and an occasional Business faculty led travel course to the Czech Republic). Refer to the Augsburg Abroad for information about opportunities and applications.
  3. Co-op Education work experience (GST 009) with an online seminar conducted in Blackboard for non-credit transcript notation. This option is particularly accessible to Weekend College students who are employed full-time.
  4. The Augsburg Experience may be fulfilled outside of the Business Administration department and your major. Be sure to check the Web pages of other departments for opportunities in their disciplines.
