What is SOAR?

SOAR is a required two-day, overnight orientation experience for incoming first-year students designed to help with the transition to Augsburg College.  Students will meet fellow classmates, faculty, and staff; learn about college resources and services; obtain fall semester schedules; and get a taste of life on campus.

Is SOAR required?

Yes.  SOAR is required for all incoming first-year students who will be starting at Augsburg College.

What can students expect at SOAR?

Students will meet fellow incoming first-year and current students, explore the campus and surrounding community, get their Augsburg IDs, receive their fall semester class schedules, and obtain important information about Augsburg College resources and services.

What do students need to do before SOAR?

For those student who have not taken their entry-level assessment tests, please visit the Academic Advising website to find available testing dates.  Students can register for their assessment tests when they complete the Online Course Request Form.  For those who live out of state or are unable to attend one of the group testing dates, please contact Academic Advising at advising@augsburg.edu or 612/330-1025 to schedule an appointment.

When absolutely necessary, incoming first-year students may arrange to take assessment tests the day before or the morning of Day One of their SOAR session.

How do students register for SOAR?

Registration for SOAR will be available in April 2010.

When and where is check-in for SOAR?

Check-in and other pre-orientation activities will take place between 8:00am - 10:00am on the first day of each SOAR session and will be located in the Christensen Center Lobby.

Is the overnight component of SOAR required?

Yes.  All incoming first-year students are required to stay overnight on campus during their SOAR session, regardless of their resident or commuter status.

Where will students stay during SOAR?

Students will stay overnight in Urness Hall, a first-year student residence hall.  Housing is not available on campus for parents or siblings.

What should students bring to SOAR?

  • Alarm clock
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Comfortable weather-appropriate clothing
  • Fan
  • Overnight items
  • Notebook
  • Towel and washcloth (bedding and linens are provided)
  • Umbrella

Can parents attend SOAR?

No.  But parents and guardians are invited to attend Parent SOAR, an optional orientation tailored towards the needs of parents of incoming first-year students at Augsburg College.  Parent SOAR takes place concurrently with the student's SOAR session.  Click here for more information.

Can siblings attend SOAR?

No.  Unfortunately, there is no programming available for siblings during SOAR or Parent SOAR.
