Paul Pribbenow, the 10th president of Augsburg University. Since joining Augsburg in 2006, Pribbenow has enhanced the university’s role as an active community partner in its urban setting. By identifying and embracing initiatives that mutually benefit Augsburg and its neighbors, the university has achieved national recognition for its excellence in service learning and experiential education. President Pribbenow also has become a leader among the 26 colleges and universities of the ELCA, helping to articulate the gifts shaping and supporting Lutheran higher education in the 21st century.

Under his leadership, Augsburg has changed its name from Augsburg College to Augsburg University, recognizing its expansive academic mission serving undergraduate and graduate students on campus and at locations around the world. Augsburg’s Board of Regents was awarded the 2017 John W. Nason Award for Board Leadership for efforts including initiating an inclusive, five-year strategic planning effort and leading the institution’s largest-ever capital campaign. President Pribbenow played a key role in Augsburg’s most successful capital campaign, which raised more than $55 million to construct the Norman and Evangeline Hagfors Center for Science, Business, and Religion, which opened January 2018. EDUCATION

President Pribbenow holds a bachelor’s degree (1978) from Luther College (Iowa) and a master’s degree (1979) and doctorate (1993) in social ethics from the University of Chicago. He received the Distinguished Service Award at Luther College in 2008.

Kathleen ‘Katie’ Clark has been teaching in the Department of Nursing since 2009 and serves as the Director of the Augsburg Central Health Commons (ACHC). Her teaching focuses on issues of social justice, health inequities, and civic engagement.  During her time in the department, Katie has designed various courses in an immersion format that allows students to gain insight first-hand from people living in the margins while learning skills of transcultural nursing as well as teaching in more traditional formats.  In 2011, in partnership with two other local non-profits, Katie launched the Health Commons in Cedar-Riverside. Before coming to Augsburg, Katie worked for eight years as a nurse at University of Minnesota Medical Center – East Bank in both oncology hematology and the medical intensive care unit.  She has traveled to 20 different countries and participated in many local volunteer programs, such as the Bridge for Youth and Higher Ground. Currently, Katie lives with her husband and three children in the town of Stillwater.

Spring Vocation Lunch with Ben Stottrup

Augsburg Faculty and Staff, you are invited to attend the spring vocation lunch with Ben Stottrup, Department Chair and Associate Professor of the Physics Department.

Ben Stottrup joined Augsburg’s Physics Department in 2005. Since then, he has enjoyed a front row seat to watch and assist Augsburg’s science majors start their careers and pursue their own adventures.  While at Augsburg, he has built a research lab focused on biomaterials, soft, and squishy interfaces. This work has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the Minnesota Space Grant Consortium, as well as private donors and foundations.  In the classroom, he has taught across nearly the entire physics curriculum with a focus on how experiential education in science labs can build professional skills for students. Through his Science of Food and Cooking course he hopes to share his curiosity and interest in biomaterials to Augsburg’s wider community.

Fall Vocation Lunch with Pastor Sonja Hagander

Augsburg Faculty and Staff, you are invited to attend the fall vocation lunch with Sonja Hagander, University Pastor and Director of Ministries.

Note: Spaces for the lunch are full. If you would like to listen to the talk without the meal, there will be chairs in the back of the East Commons for you to sit. Note Sonja’s presentation will begin about 11:40 am.

Sonja Hagander

PASTOR SONJA HAGANDER brings a deep passion for helping young adults explore Christian vocation and creating lives of faith and service. She has also led several interfaith initiatives at Augsburg, the ELCA’s most diverse college. In that context, she plans and leads worship each week in a challenging but very energizing urban multi-faith community. She has served as Pastor-Theologian at the Center of Theological Inquiry, Princeton University, and as Chaplain and emcee to the ELCA Youth Ministry Extravaganza Conference which hosts more than 1,000 pastors and youth leaders. She has been a contributor to “Word and World” and the ELCA e-zine for women, “BoldCafe.org.”  She lives in the Twin Cities with her family. They love all things water: paddleboarding, skiing, canoeing, swimming, sailing, and kayaking. She most recently co-authored a book entitled, “Faith in Action: A Handbook for Activists, Advocates and Allies”, for Fortress Press.

More about our speaker:

robert k. tom has been teaching three-dimensional studio art and design at Augsburg University since 2002. His interdisciplinary creative process and teaching methodology have been influenced by his Hawaiian/Chinese heritage combined with a fusion of Eastern, Western, and Pacific Island thought and aesthetics. He creates interactive works that asks the viewer to contemplate disparate perspectives and acceptance of divergent possibilities. robert pursues a multi-media approach in seeking solutions to his questions.

A Minnesota State Arts Board Cultural Collaborative grant and a Forecast Public Arts grant pairs the Augsburg University community with students from Cedar-Riverside Elementary School. This project promotes a deeper level of understanding and commitment to sustaining a more cohesive community.  One of the CR/AU collaborations is a bas-relief ceramic mural set to be installed in the new HCSBR.

Prior to working at Augsburg University, Robert taught at Minnesota State University Moorhead, and from 1995-98 was visiting faculty at Minnesota State University campus in Akita, Japan. He then followed his heart to Brisbane, Australia, to pursue studio work, and back to Minnesota in 2000 where he has since taken root.

More about our speaker:“TINA” MARIA TAVERA

Maria Cristina (“Tina”) Tavera has been the director of Augsburg’s TRIO-McNair Scholars program since March 2008.  Funded by the Department of Education, the McNair Scholars program helps income-eligible, first generation, and underrepresented students prepare for and matriculate to graduate school. Prior to her director role, Tavera was an Academic Advisor for Augsburg’s TRIO-Student Support Services program for four years, and has been working for and devoted to TRIO students for over 20 years. Tavera is an artist, independent curator, and activist who has exhibited at Augsburg; she is also one of the artists selected to create a public art piece for the Hagfors Center for Science, Business and Religion.  She sees parallels between her artistic efforts to decrease cultural alienation and expand society’s artistic vision and her passion for equal access to education. Her vocation is greatly influenced by her transnational upbringing between Minnesota and Mexico, as her scholarly research specialization is in Latino and Latin American art.

Bill Green began working at Augsburg in 1991 as a Professor of History. Over the years, he has held several different teaching positions, including working as both an Adjunct Associate Professor of History at St. John’s University and as an Adjunct Associate Professor of Leadership, Policy, and Organization at Vanderbilt University. From 2006-2010, he served as the Superintendent of Minneapolis Public Schools. Since 2013, he has been back at Augsburg serving as a Professor of History. He regularly teaches Minnesota History, American Legal History, History of Civil Rights, History of African American Religion, 19th Century U.S. History, and History of African American Education.
