What do I need in order to show eligibility for CLASS?

The best documentation you can give us would be a formal assessment that follows the guidelines described in CLASS’s Documentation of a Disability. Before making a final decision to hire an assessor, show this policy to him or her to make sure that the assessment will meet CLASS criteria.

How should I choose an assessor?

The best way is to shop around. Call the assessors that interest you, and ask them questions such as:

  • What are your qualifications?
  • Do you have an area of specialty?
  • Do you have experience evaluating adults in college?
  • Do you use a standard battery of tests?
  • Do you include a clinical interview?
  • Does your assessment include a follow-up conference to go over the report orally and to give me a chance to ask questions?
  • How much time do you think the testing will take?
  • Would you be able to complete the testing and provide me with the formal report within my time line?
  • How much will the assessment cost?
  • Can you help me determine if my insurance will cover the testing?
  • Do you offer student discounts or alternate payment options?
  • Is there an additional charge for any necessary follow-up letters or documentation?

Will my health insurance cover the assessment?

In a few cases health insurance will cover educational assessments. If you belong to an HMO, testing may be covered only if it is conducted by the HMO. Check with your health insurance carrier to find out whether you have coverage. Once you have decided which assessor to hire, ask him or her to request a pre-authorization for insurance coverage.

How can I get the most out of the testing?

The assessor will be able to give you the best service if you begin by describing what you would like to learn from the testing. In addition to finding out whether or not you have a learning disability, do you want:

  • recommendations for accommodations and compensatory strategies?
  • a list of academic skills you could remediate through private tutoring?
  • information about how your learning disability would affect you in a job?
  • The assessor can tailor the testing to meet your particular goals.

How should I prepare for the assessment?

It may be helpful if you give the assessor copies of your transcripts, special education records, and reports from previous testing. Another good way to prepare is to take a mental inventory about your learning. Think back over your educational experiences. What tasks or subjects have been easy or difficult for you? What kinds of educational settings or circumstances allow you to learn best? Which ones give you problems? What kind of “tricks,” compensations, or devices have you learned to use? What kinds of problems are you experiencing currently? If you think about these issues beforehand, you will be better able to help the assessor do the best possible job.
