Academic Success
What increases the likelihood of academic success?
- Initiate and access services and accommodations at the beginning of the school year
- Attend regular meetings with a Disability Specialist
- Maintain regular contact with an academic advisor, TRiO advisor, or other campus resources
- Visit professors during their office hours for questions, clarification, feedback, etc.
- Have an understanding of the impact of the disability and compensatory strategies that work
- Attend supplemental instruction sessions
- Routinely use a planner and/or other organizational and time management tools
- Use technology
- Seek out the library reference staff
- Be open to utilizing the counseling center and tutoring as needed
- Bring outlines and papers to the writing lab
What students should have
- A planner: paper or electronic version, that breaks the day down into 15 minute intervals, and has a week at a glance
- Post-it notes: a variety of sizes and colors
- Highlighters: The more colors the better (Zazzle packs of 12 colors)
- Notecards: 3×5 loose or those on a spiral binding
- 3 ring binders
- Tab sheets with folders
- Loose-leafed paper
- Clear sheet protector
