FACULTY - David R. Hanson

Assistant Professor

I arrived at Augsburg’s chemistry department in the summer of ’06 with

  • (i) an interest in teaching and
  • (ii) years of research experience in atmospheric chemistry.

With a formal training in physics and a large dose of chemistry courses as an undergraduate, my research focus is on the chemistry of the air.  This has involved diverse applications of chemistry knowledge, mostly physical chemistry with some kinetics, analytical, and organic. My research has been directed towards topics such as the stratospheric ozone layer, urban air quality, and global climate issues.  I will continue to pursue research on these important topics.

This year my teaching focuses on general chemistry which has been very stimulating to revisit and to teach: Summer of ’06, team-taught w/ Dr. Fedie an online course (CHM 102, with three lab sessions), Fall ’06 day school CHM 100/102 with laboratory, Spring ’07 one section of CHM106 lab and SCI110 with Lab.

Currently, I am continuing my atmospheric chemistry research on two fronts: particle formation that has applications to global warming processes and trace constituent detection important for air quality issues.  There are opportunities for undergraduates to be involved with these research topics.
