Michael J. Lansing received the A.B. in History and in Religious Studies from the College of William & Mary, the M.A. in History from Utah State University, and the Ph.D. in History from the University of Minnesota (2003). He previously taught at Utah State University and the State University of New York at Buffalo and served as Visiting Assistant Editor at the Western Historical Quarterly.

Besides teaching introductory courses in U.S. and Latin American history, Michael offers upper-level courses in western history, environmental history, gender history, and public history. He is a co-author of The American West: A Concise History (Wiley-Blackwell, 2008) and his essays have appeared in the Western Historical Quarterly, Environmental History, the Journal of Historical Geography, the Utah Historical Quarterly, and Ethics, Place, and Environment.  His current project is a book-length examination of the Nonpartisan League.

Michael also serves as the director of the Environmental Studies program and is a participating faculty member in Augsburg's Women's Studies program. He is also the faculty adviser for the Augsburg History Society, the Alpha Mu Lambda chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, and Augsburg's Coalition for Student Activism.
