Because practicing scientists do much more than study textbooks, Augsburg provides opportunities for practical experience in the sciences outside the normal curriculum. Dave Venne, along with Bill Jasperson, are part of the Center for Atmospheric and Space Sciences at Augsburg College. This group’s ongoing efforts include analyzing meteorological and climate date, applying artificial intelligence techniques to weather forecasting demands, and developing educational museum exhibits on meteorology.
The Center came to Augsburg from Control Data in 1990. The meteorological research group at Control Data was looking for a place to relocate. After they came to Augsburg, the group continued to do research and teach a few college courses.
Venne tries to approach teaching from a student’s standpoint. He finds the smaller class sizes at Augsburg a big advantage to students. He often teaches astronomy, which is a hobby of his.
