FACULTY - Daniel S Hanson

Assistant Professor

My friends ask me why I teach courses in Communication Studies. My stock answer is: because life is about communication and relationships. As the students in my classes know (perhaps only too well), the way I usually put it is: I'm sure that all of life is not about communication and relationships; I just haven't figured out which part isn't.

The truth is my interest in communication and relationships goes back a long time. In my previous life as a so-called corporate executive, I was keenly aware of the importance of communication and relationships. This prompted me to write A Place to Shine: Emerging from the Shadows at Work and Cultivating Common Ground: Releasing the Power of Relationships at Work. More recently, I have become interested in the role of communication and relationships in families that deal with serious mental illness. This interest has been fueled by my own family's struggle with schizophrenia, a story that I share in my most recent book, Room for J: A Family Struggles with Schizophrenia.

I love to talk about this stuff. So, if you are interested in topics such as “communication, relationships, and the compassionate life,” send me an email or give me a call. Better yet, sign up for one of my classes.
