Core Curriculum

Augsburg Core Curriculum
The blueprint for an Augsburg Education is the Augsburg Core Curriculum, designed to prepare you to be an effective, informed, and ethical citizen in the 21st century.

Grounded in a strong liberal arts foundation, the curriculum promotes the development of intellectual and professional skills. But it goes farther and deeper, engaging you in an inquiry about your faith and calling in life, and supporting you in meaningful experiences outside of the classroom.

The “Augsburg Core Curriculum” includes the following components:
“Augsburg Seminar,” or “AugSem,” helps first-year students make the transition to college in “learning communities” based on an academic interest. If you live on campus, you will also see a lot of your AugSem classmates on or near your floor, as roommate and floor assignments for first year students are made based on common academic interest areas.

The “Search for Meaning” courses are where themes most important to Augsburg’s mission and vision—vocation, identity, and Christian faith—are introduced as you reflect on these issues as well as non-Christian faiths. Yes, Augsburg is a Lutheran-affiliated college, but we welcome those from all faith backgrounds.

The “Engaging Minneapolis” component introduces you to life in the Twin Cities—by exploring the local arts scene, studying environmental issues on the Mississippi River, tutoring neighborhood immigrant children, sampling the local ethnic cuisine, and much more.

The “Augsburg Experience” links your academic study to involvement in the broader community, either locally or globally. This experience can include study abroad, an internship, research with a professor, community service-learning, or an off-campus immersion project.

"Liberal Arts Foundations" allow you to learn and appreciate different disciplines by taking two courses from different departments in each of the four academic domains: natural science, social science, fine arts, and humanities.

“Senior Keystone,” completed your senior year, is a culmination of your Augsburg academic experience. It connects the liberal arts foundation with professional skills and the in-depth study in your major, helping you begin the transition to your after-college life.
