Department of Public Safety - CRIME ALERTS, LOGS, AND REPORTS

Augsburg keeps an ongoing record of reported crimes and will distribute crime alerts for serious incidents which occur on campus or in areas immediately nearby. Please access the menu to the right to view the various alerts and reports as well as a more in depth description of the specific areas.

Crime Alerts

About Crime Alerts Augsburg’s Department of Public Safety distributes crime alerts for serious incidents that may pose an on-going or continuing threat. Alerts may be distributed for incidents that occurred on, or in areas immediately adjacent to, college property. When alerts are distributed, it is most commonly for one of the following incidents: arson, aggravated assault, burglary, criminal homicide, motor vehicle theft, robbery, and sex offenses. Alerts may also be distributed for other types of incidents as deemed necessary.

Crime alerts may be distributed to all students, staff and faculty or they may be distributed to a localized area of the College if it is determined that the threat is specific to a particular area. Crime alerts are printed on red paper and posted in frames near building entrances. These same frames hold a green sheet paper when there isn’t a current alert. Crime alerts may also be electronically distributed via e-mail.

In addition to the crime alerts, Augsburg's Department of Public Safety maintains a log of reported crimes.

Recent Crime Alerts

ISSUED APRIL 27, 2009

On Friday, April 24, 2009, electronic devices were stolen from a locked office in Old Main. An employee left the office and locked the door at approximately 9:30 a.m. When the employee returned at 11:00 a.m., two office doors had been forced open. Two laptops, a digital camera and a wallet were taken.

If you have any information regarding this crime, please contact the Minneapolis Police Department or Augsburg's Department of Public Safety. You can reach DPS all day, every day by dialing 1717 from an on-campus phone or 612-330-1717 from an off-campus phone.

You Can Help Prevent Crime at Augsburg!

  • Always lock your office whenever you leave, even if you will only be gone briefly. Most home burglaries take only 3 to 5 minutes, office burglaries can take even less time.
  • If no one is in your office suite, lock the suite door also. The suite doors are often sturdier and more difficult to force open than interior office doors. Additionally, locking a suite door requires a thief to begin their work in a public hallway rather than a private and unmonitored suite.
  • Be aware of strangers who may be looking for valuables to return and steal later. Immediately report suspicious activity to Augsburg DPS.
  • Regularly back-up all data on your computer and encourage your colleagues to do likewise. Students and employees should contact student computing or their LFC respectively with questions about backing up their data.
  • Keep valuables out of view. If possible, secure them in drawer or cabinet. Better yet, take your valuables with you or leave them at home.
  • Keep your car keys on your person at all times. If a crook can take your keys, they can take your car.

If you have questions or concerns regarding crime at Augsburg, please contact John Pack, Director of Public Safety at 612-330-1644 or pack@augsburg.edu.
