Department of Public Safety - RAPE AGRESSION DEFENSE (RAD) COURSE

Picture of RAD training in progress.

Rape Aggression Defense System

The Rape Aggression Defense System is a program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women. The R.A.D. System is a comprehensive, women-only course that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and risk avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training. R.A.D. is not a Martial Arts program. Our courses are taught by nationally certified R.A.D. Instructors and provide each student with a workbook/reference manual. This manual outlines the entire Physical Defense Program for reference and continuous personal growth, and is the key to our free lifetime return and practice policy for R.A.D. graduates. Augsburg Security Officer, Jennifer Kellogg will be instructing R.A.D. courses on campus. See schedule below.

Here's what Augsburg students are saying about R.A.D.

"I loved the R.A.D. class, I feel terrific!" (January 2000)
"Great first class, I can't wait to take more...I feel empowered!" (January 2000)
"R.A.D. was fun and improved my confidence!" (September 2000)
"I now know I have the skills to fight off an attack." (September 2000)

Be Aware

1 out of every 4 U.S. college women polled was sexually assaulted during four years at college. (MS. Magazine study on Sexual Assault and Rape.)

Develop your Options

In 1988, rape victims took self protective measures in 86.7% of the cases. Rape victims were more likely to defend themselves than assault or robbery victims. (Criminal victimization in the United States, 1988)

Don't be Victimized by Fear

"In fact, the most often used strategy for avoiders (of rape) appears to have been a combination of screaming and use of physical resistance." (Bart & O'Brien P., 1985, Stopping Rape: Successful Survival Strategies. Pergamon Press, New York.)

For information on date rape drugs, please visit the R.A.D. Systems Date Rape Drug Information Website

The R.A.D. twelve-hour course on campus will also discuss the topic of date rape drugs. Please see the schedule below.
