Readings in American Drama (Spring 2008, TTh 1:30-3))
Professor Doug Green
Readings in American Drama is “a variable survey of American drama from the early 20th century to the present, organized historically and/or thematically. Sample topics include American Families, Blacks and Whites, and Sex and Self on the American Stage. Readings range from O’Neill and Treadwell to Shanley and Parks. (Prereq.: ENL 220 or 221, or a 200-level literature course or THR 250, or consent of instructor.)”
In Spring 2008 we will be looking at plays over the last 30 years that have a strong social and/or political edge, including works extending from the likes of Edward Albee, David Mamet, Sam Shepard, August Wilson, and Wendy Wasserstein to those by Holly Hughes, Suzan-Lori Parks, John Patrick Shanley, Tony Kushner, and Sarah Ruehl. We’ll venture out into local theatre. And we’ll consider the big question: What makes these American dramas American?
