Augsburg Core Curriculum
Entry Level Assessments
Upon entry in the College, all students need to demonstrate proficiency in the skills of writing, math, and critical thinking. Where appropriate, these tests will be satisfied by a student’s transfer work. Your transfer credit evaluation will list which assessments, if any, you are expected to complete before your first term at Augsburg.
Core Skill Requirements
The Core Skills consist of Effective Writing, Modern Language, and Foundations of Fitness. All of these requirements may be satisfied by transfer work.
- Effective Writing is Augsburg's freshman composition course and is typically completed by the middle of sophomore year.
- Modern Language: All students must study a modern language through level two (e.g., Beginning French I & II). Students with knowledge of, but without coursework in Spanish, French, or German may take a placement test to determine the appropriate course to begin language study at Augsburg.
- Lifetime Fitness: Two lifetime fitness courses are required. HPE 001: Foundations of Fitness is required of all students. The second course may be chosen from a variety of activities. The transfer evaluation will note if any transfer courses satisfy this requirement.
The Signature Curriculum
The Signature Curriculum consists of coursework and experiences that reflect Augsburg’s mission. The following components comprise the Signature Curriculum:
- Search for Meaning courses offer students the opportunity to critically reflect upon Augsburg’s concept of vocation and its meaning; ideas from Christian theology and other religious traditions; and the meaning of the Bible in Judeo-Christian thought, its cultural contexts, and concepts of human identity and vocation. Students transferring with fewer than 13 credits will complete two Search for Meaning courses (REL 100 and 200), while transfer students with 13 or more credits complete one course (REL 300).
- Augsburg First Year: All Day Program students beginning Augsburg with fewer than 7 credits will complete the course sequence of Augsburg Seminar and Engaging Minneapolis. Augsburg Seminar is designed to ease the transition to college, while Engaging Minneapolis highlights the importance of Augsburg’s urban location. Most Engaging Minneapolis courses also fulfill an Augsburg Core Curriculum or major requirement.
- Augsburg Experience: All students must complete at least one approved Augsburg Experience as a requirement for graduation. Five categories of experiential learning opportunities are recognized as Augsburg Experiences: internships, faculty-student research, community service, study abroad, and off-campus immersion experiences.
- Senior Keystone courses connect the broad liberal arts foundation with the professional skills and in-depth study of the major. The Senior Keystone course provides a final opportunity for exploring the central themes of an Augsburg education vocation and the search for meaning in a diverse and challenging world.
Liberal Arts Foundation
The Liberal Arts Foundation courses introduce students to knowledge and modes of inquiry across a wide range of disciplines and subjects. Appropriate transfer work will be applied toward the Liberal Arts Foundation areas. For each of the four Foundation areas, students choose two courses from two different departments (e.g., the Humanities requirement may be fulfilled with one English course and one History course).
- Natural Sciences and Mathematics: Two courses, each from a different department: Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics. One course must be an approved lab science.
- Social and Behavioral Sciences: Two courses, each from a different department: Economics, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology.
- Humanities: Two courses, each from a different department: Communication Studies, English, History, Philosophy, Religion, Modern Language (literature courses).
- Fine Arts: Two courses, each from a different department: Art, Film, Music, Theatre Arts.
Other General Requirements
In addition to the Augsburg Core Curriculum, students must satisfy the following requirements for graduation:
- Accumulate a minimum of 32 course credits. The 32 credits include Augsburg Core Curriculum courses, major coursework, and electives.
- Students must complete a minimum of 9 course credits at Augsburg.
- At least 7 of the final 9 credits/requirements must be completed at Augsburg.
- In general, no more than 13 course credits may be in any one department.
- Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 (some departments require a higher GPA within the major).
- Complete a major.
