FINE ARTS AT AUGSBURG - Scholarship Program FAQs

1. Can I apply for more than one Fine Arts Scholarship?

Yes, you are certainly welcome to apply for more than one Fine Arts Scholarship; however, you will only be awarded one Fine Arts Scholarship.  We recommend applying for your top two choices and no more than three.

2. Can I receive a music scholarship for any instrument?

We only offer music scholarships for the instruments for which we provide instruction.  These instruments include:  Piano, organ, violin, viola, cello, bass, double bass, harp, classical guitar, electric bass, trumpet, trombone, French horn, euphonium, tuba, flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, saxophone, percussion, and voice.

3. Can I apply for both the Fine Arts Scholarship & the President’s Scholarship?

Yes, you may apply for both the President’s and the Fine Arts Scholarship.  If you do choose to apply for both, your Fine Arts Scholarship audition will most likely take place on Friday, because the President’s competition will take place on Saturday.  If you are awarded the President’s Scholarship, you will not receive a Fine Arts Scholarship.  However, if you receive an Honor’s Regents’ scholarship, you can also receive a Fine Arts Scholarship.

4. How many scholarships are awarded?

While the Fine Arts Scholarship is a competitive scholarship, faculty members have the ability to award as many scholarships as they wish.  Therefore, we do offer a substantial number of scholarships within each of the fine arts departments (music, theatre, film, visual arts).

5. When will I hear back if I won a scholarship?

You should receive notification by mail within 2 weeks after auditioning.

6. I’ve been admitted to Augsburg for the spring semester, can I still apply for a Fine Arts Scholarship?

Yes!  The majority of our students enter Augsburg during fall semester, so we’ve instituted Scholarship Weekend as an official audition time, but we welcome spring semester students to apply as well provided you submit the Fine Arts Scholarship application prior to November 1st .  Contact Janet Morales at 612-330-1577 for further information about this option.

7. How do I schedule my audition time?

For students entering in the Fall 10-11:  You will audition during Scholarship Weekend, February 19-20, 2010.  Auditions typically take place on Saturday morning , although some will take place on Friday afternoon/evening (particularly for those competing for both the President’s and the Fine Arts Scholarship).  Once you have been both admitted to the college and we have received and processed your completed Fine Arts Scholarship application we will conact you to set up an audition time.  The sooner you turn in your materials, the sooner you will be asked to select an audition time (so turn in your applications early for the best selection).

For students entering in the Spring 09-10:  Your audition will be set up as an individual appointment.  Once you have been both admitted to the college and we have received and processed your completed Fine Arts Scholarship application we will call you to set up an audition time.

8. What happens during Scholarship Weekend, February  19-20, 2010?

Student artwork, abstract, turqoise and brownScholarship Weekend is when auditions are held on campus for the Fine Arts Scholarships and for the President’s Scholarship.  It’s also a great time for you to get an inside look at the college.  You’ll have the chance to stay overnight on campus in the residence halls and participate in on-campus events – which may include movie nights, concerts, sporting events and information sessions.  The weekend ends with a luncheon on Saturday, hosted by our President, Paul Pribbenow.

9. What if I can’t make it to Scholarship Weekend?

If you can’t make it to Scholarship Weekend, we still encourage you to apply for a Fine Arts Scholarship.  There are many options to compete from a distance (phone interview, cd audition, etc.)  Please contact Janet Morales at 612-330-1577 prior to submitting your application if you would like to make arrangements.

10. Do I have to stay overnight during Scholarship Weekend?

While it’s not a requirement to stay overnight during Scholarship Weekend, it’s highly recommended.  This is your chance to experience the campus from the perspective of the student.  Prospective students will stay overnight in the residence halls with current Fine Arts Students.

11. What should I bring with me during my overnight?

You should plan on bringing a sleeping bag, pillow, toiletries, clothing for the audition/interview, comfortable clothing and, if you wish, spending money.  If you have not already submitted a digital art portfolio, you should bring your original portfolio to campus for review.  If you are a music student, be sure to bring your instrument and sheet music.

12. Will there be instrument storage/practice rooms available?

Yes, there will be secure instrument storage and practice rooms available.  Upon check-in, we can show you where these facilities are located.

13. Should parents attend Scholarship Weekend as well?

Parents are most welcome to attend Scholarship Weekend.  We have planned special presentations which may be of interest to parents, while you are auditioning – some selections from last year included financial aid, study abroad, academic advising, on campus research and the parent’s council.  Parents are welcome to join in for meals on campus, but they should make hotel arrangements for themselves.  A list of nearby hotels can be found here: http://www.augsburg.edu/day/visit/hotels.html

14. Can I visit classes during Scholarship Weekend?

Life is a Dream theatre performersUnfortunately, because of the large influx of visitors to campus, we cannot accommodate class visits.  You may however, have the opportunity to visit a portion of theatre or music ensemble rehearsals.  You are certainly welcome to set up another time to visit classes through our admissions office by calling 800-788-5678.

15. What will the audition be like?

The auditions are closed auditions.  Typically 2-4 faculty members will hear the audition and ask you some follow up questions.  Parents are not able to sit in on the auditions.

16. What are the requirements for renewing the scholarship if I’m offered one?

The requirements for renewing the scholarship vary based on the department, but are limited to participation in the arts and hosting during Scholarship Weekend.  If you are offered a scholarship, you will be asked to sign an Acceptance Agreement which specifically outlines the scholarship requirements.  Our Fine Arts Scholars do find the time to participate in a wide variety of activities, not solely the arts.
