Notes
I can define my identity only against the background
of things that matter. But to bracket out history, nature, society, the
demands of solidarity, everything but what I find in myself, would eliminate
all candidates for what matters.
-- Charles Taylor, The Ethics of Authenticity
I’ve seen the products and the other world of
waste – I’ve seen the colour of corruption deep within –
I’ve seen them lose themselves in dignity and taste – To see
in black and white and through to black again – And they left it
for you, all of this for you
-- Joy Division, The Drawback
I’m looking for an ideal for living.
My gut reaction is to reject perfection.
The subjects of my pictures tend to show their scars.
The title for this show is stolen from Joy Division’s title for
their first record.
Charles Taylor says we become who we are through dialogue.
These pictures have more in common with pop music than they do with fine
art.
