“Voice to Vision: Holocaust Survivors Share Their Experiences through Art”
A collaborative project directed by David Feinberg

Gage Family Art Gallery, Augsburg College
January 14–February 18, 2005

The exhibition “Voice to Vision”: Holocaust Survivors Share Their Experiences through Art” opens in the Gage Family Art Gallery at Augsburg College on Friday, January 14 and runs through Friday, February 18. The Augsburg College Art Galleries are pleased to be sponsoring this exhibition in conjunction with the 17th Annual Nobel Peace Prize Forum that is being held at Augsburg February 11–12.

This collaborative project directed by David Feinberg, professor of art at the University of Minnesota, began over three years ago when Feinberg, assisted by Dr. Stephen Feinstein, Director of the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, undergraduate and graduate art students, and professional artists in the community, began interviewing two Holocaust survivors who had never shared their survival stories. Employing a variety of techniques to elicit memories of the past, the visual research team was able to capture on video, in photographs, and in mixed-media constructions remarkable tales of terror, hope, luck, and perseverance. The project soon expanded to include three more remarkable survivors. This exhibition features fourteen collaboratively conceived works of art, several photomontages, and video segments of the discussions and art making sessions.

The opening reception for “Voice to Vision” is Friday, January 21 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. In addition, a special event will take place on Saturday, February 12 from 10:30 a.m.–12:15 p.m. in the Gage Family Art Galley. The “Saturday Seminar” will include extended video footage and a discussion with David Feinberg and Holocaust survivors. The public is encouraged but not required to register for the Forum to attend this special event.

The Gage Family Art Gallery is located at 22nd Avenue South and 7th Street on the second floor of Lindell Library on the Augsburg College campus. The gallery hours are 10 a.m.–7 p.m. Monday–Friday and 1–5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. For more gallery information call 612-330-1524.
