Commonplace imagery---mass-produced, observed, and
remembered---becomes a threatening encounter in Willcox’s painting
series Witness. By juxtaposing seemingly unrelated references to moments
and places, to people and objects, the artist gives viewers the opportunity
to draw their own conclusions about possible commonalities and contradictions.
For the artist, “These varying methods of perception and representation
form our collective memories and sympathies. I want to see how I might
best use them to evoke the memories and sympathies of my audience.”
An MFA graduate from the Mason Gross School of the
Art at Rutgers University, Willcox has exhibited widely in the United
States and Ontario, Canada. She is currently a professor of art at Macalester
College.
