"Crucible," 2006
Soft unyru paper, reed, and wire, 42”h x 30”dia.
Fragile, determined, and luminous—these are the first words
that come to mind
upon seeing the sculpture of Kim Matthews. The rich variations of
form are
equaled only by the inventiveness of material combinations that
always include
unusual handmade or commercial papers.
For Matthews, “The process
of art itself
is also significant: as a metaphor for efforts toward the attainment
of
spiritual enlightenment; as a reminder of humanity's place in nature--that
we
are dynamic, ever-changing, and physically ephemeral beings; and
as a marker of
the growth that results from engagement in any act of creation.”
In recent years Matthews has exhibited widely at local and regional
museums and
galleries. Her work was most recently featured in a solo show at
the Phipps
Center for the Arts in Hudson, Wis. in 2005.
All events at Augsburg are free and open to the public.
