Mayumi Amada’s artwork, like the artist herself, is hard to classify. She is a sculptor, installation artist, fashion designer, swimmer, lover of cast-off objects, and cultivator of domestic handicrafts. Themes, ranging from generational and artistic inheritance to the environment, appear in a wide variety of media (e.g., metal, plastic bottles, crocheted doilies). What unites her artistic production, however, is her quest to produce “something beautiful from a material we can find in our daily lives.”
Amada, who has a Bachelor’s degree in Health and Physical Education from Tsukuba University in Japan, received her M.F.A from the University of Minnesota in 2006. She has recently had her work exhibited at the Rochester Art Center and is a recipient of a Hennepin County public art commission.
All events are free and open to the public.
