Lucia Hwang's 3-D, three-part installation includes 365 rolls of toilet paper and cannot help but raise curiosity. The mundane household objects she uses have an immediate familiarity but are presented together in a foreign arrangement heightened with materialism. By offering this skewed construction of reality complete with a designer trash can and stylish egg cartons, Hwang brings up the conflict that occurs when people cannot entirely accept or reject the world around them. The dichotomy she finds in her own life is the inspiration for her work. For the artist, her work is “the true confession and acceptance of this schismatic world.”
Born in Seoul, South Korea, Hwang received a B.A. in Fine Arts from Augustana College in 2003. She has exhibited in a number of group shows in Iowa including the Asian Heritage Festival Invitation Art Exhibition, Fitch Studio Gallery, and Heritage Art Gallery.
