Building on Augsburg's long tradition of an exhibits
program on campus, two formal art exhibition spaces have been established.
In fall 2007 the Gage Family Art Gallery relocated from the James Lindell Library to the first floor of the newly built Oren Gateway Center. The center's architect, BWBR of St. Paul,
designed this dynamic asymmetical gallery space.
The Christensen Center Gallery, which replaced the
earlier "Alumni Gallery," opened in fall 2002 as one of the highlights
of the newly renovated Christensen Center. Also designed by BWBR of St.
Paul, the gently curving gallery with its 45-foot long floor-to-ceiling
glass wall is immediately visible when entering this busy student center.
The Student Art Gallery in Christensen Center, located just behind the Christensen Center Art Gallery and in the coffee shop seating area behind the fireplace, provides a space for senior art majors to present their solo art exhibitions. Special exhibition projects that are related to Augsburg are also featured here when space is available.
Art Galleries Internship/Work Study Opportunities
Each year up to two students assist the Galleries
Coordinator in all aspects of running the Augsburg Art Galleries. Students
learn how to install and de-install art, refurbish galleries between shows,
write press releases, design and distribute publicity materials, and host
receptions and other special events. On average students work four or
five hours per week except during show change (twice in the fall and three
times in the spring), when students work 20 to 30 hours repairing and
reinstalling the galleries and helping with the opening receptions.
At times more work study students are needed to serve
as gallery guards for special exhibitions. When such needs arise a job
posting will appear on the Human Resources office and website
and an announcement will be made in the Daily
A-mail.
