Galleries and Exhibits - 2005 Augsburg College Summer Emerging Artist Series
Inside/Out: Sculpture by Jason Marchiafava
May 31-July 15, 2005
Christensen Center Art Gallery, Christensen Center
Opening reception: Friday, June 3, 5:30-7:30 p.m.
Food wrappers, receipts, pens, pills, and even a cell phone are just some of the items that simultaneously emerge and disappear within Jason Marchiafava’s series of women’s purses cast in concrete. Each purse was donated along with its contents—familiar objects that the donor would carry on a day-to-day basis. By focusing on one of the most gender-specific accessories in American culture, the purse, this body of work humorously opens up to scrutiny aspects of gender construction and socialization.
Marchiafava was raised in Minneapolis and received his BFA from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. After completing his MFA from Pratt Institute in New York he returned to the Twin Cities. He works with a variety of materials including metal, wood, concrete, and neon.
