Symposium: Cultural Crossroads: East/West Aesthetics
Saturday, March 12, 2005, 12:30–3:30 p.m.

Vibrant color and lyrical movement create evocations of grassy fields and serene waterscapes in new paintings by Joonja Lee Mornes. Her poetic exhibition “Meditating on Seasons and Light” opens in the Gage Family Art Gallery on Friday, February 25 with an opening reception from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

For Mornes, an Asian-American artist who grew up in Seoul, Korea, her work is both “East and West.” Investigating these diverse cultural influences will be the focus of a special symposium on Saturday, March 12. The symposium “Cultural Crossroads: East/West Aesthetics” will feature a gallery tour and presentation by Mornes followed by a discussion of her work by other visual artists whose own work is grounded in an appreciation and understanding of both eastern and western aesthetic traditions. Kinji Atagawa, Martha Johnson, robert tom will also share examples of their own cross-cultural art projects with the public. This community-oriented activity is made possible in part by a 2005 Cultural Community Partnership Grant that Mornes, in conjunction with the Augsburg College Art Galleries, received from the Minnesota State Arts Board, through an appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

The Gage Family Art Gallery is located at 22nd Avenue South and 7th Street on the second floor of Lindell Library on the Augsburg College campus. The gallery hours are 10 a.m.–7 p.m. Monday–Friday and 1–5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
