Local Business in a Big-Box/Online World: A Panel Discussion
Wednesday, March 4, 6:00 p.m.
Marshall Room, Christensen Center
Photographer Kelly Povo and writer Bruce Johansen explore, in visual images and words, the disappearance of one-of-a-kind businesses and the loss it creates in our local communities. Povo, who has been a professional photographer for 26 years, uses a 4x5 pinhole camera to capture in black and white the quiet desolation of boarded over doors and window and in color those places that continue to thrive and bustle with activity. Along with these images is an accompanying text by Johansen, a writer and ethnographer, whose commentary will stream across some of the images to create a unique and compelling narrative.
A March 4 panel discussion in conjunction with the exhibition will feature business owners from the Seward and Cedar-Riverside neighborhoods. Panelists will share some personal history as a local business owner or advocate, offer a few comments on why local businesses are indispensable parts of communities, and provide some observations about the challenges that independent businesses face, particularly in this economic climate.
All events are free and open to the public.
