Out of the Blue Blog
Out of the Blue features a variety of mixed media work by members of Spectrum ArtWorks. These artists frequently exhibit together, some of their shows dealing expressly with the experience of living with mental illness and some not. In Out of the Blue, Spectrum ArtWorks artists will take the opportunity to each display a significant new piece of work that highlights their own personal style while finding a common thread and theme in the blues: blue as a color, the blues as music and as a state of mind passed through by all.
Several participating artists and Amy Rice, Spectrum ArtWorks Program Manager, will be discussing the exhibition on Thursday, February 26 at 1:30 p.m.
Spectrum ArtWorks is a non-profit visual art organization in the heart of Minneapolis that provides studio space and community for artists living with a mental illness. In addition to producing amazing art Spectrum ArtWorks Artists work to educate the public about mental illness and in doing so break down the stigma associated with the disease.
In 2005 Spectrum ArtWorks received national recognition with the Eli Lilly “Moving Lives Forward Award”, in 2006 the VSA of Minnesota gave Spectrum ArtWorks an Arts Accessibility Award for making the arts more accessible to people with disabilities, and NAMI (National Alliance for Mental Illness) gave Amy Rice, Spectrum ArtWorks Program Manager (and Augsburg alumna), the Mental Health Provider of the Year Award.
Spectrum ArtWorks is a division of RESOURCE—a private, nonprofit, United Way agency that provides services in the areas of employment, training, chemical health, and mental health. Spectrum services are funded by Hennepin County, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Greater Twin Cities United Way, community foundations, and private donors.
