Whether traveling a pilgrimage trail, teaching on a riverbank, or working en plein air, Tara Sweeney, assistant professor in studio arts at Augsburg College, is awed by the world. Her passions for walking, teaching, painting, and drawing have come together in the creation of the mixed media series, LISTEN. In the summer of 2006, she and a history colleague led fifteen students on an Augsburg short-term study abroad program that included walking a portion of the traditional Chemin de St. Jacques pilgrimage route in southern France. Drawing and painting are boldly intermingled in LISTEN, her new body of work reflecting the spiritual and creative experience of pilgrimage.
Professor Sweeney has been teaching art at Augsburg since 1990. For ten years prior to that, she was an independent graphic designer, and art director for Minneapolis St. Paul Magazine. She received undergraduate degrees in studio art, and clothing and textile design from the University of Wisconsin, and an MFA from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Her current body of work explores the connection between figure, identity, and spirituality in mixed media painting and drawing.
