This retrospective exhibition of Augsburg emeritus professor Philip Thompson marks the 50th anniversary of his arrival at Augsburg College. The show highlights work in a wide variety of media and styles, ranging from satirical prints to painted geometric abstractions and found object assemblages. While his works have been collected by many individuals and institutions over the decades, one of his most constant supporters has been Gene Skibbe, emeritus professor of religion at Augsburg. Dr. Skibbe's impassioned interest in art brought the two men together and over the years Dr. Skibbe acquired more than a dozen pieces by Thompson. These works have recently been donated to Augsburg and many of them are included in this exhibition.
Thompson earned his M.F.A. in studio art from the University of Iowa and came to Augsburg in 1959. In addition to teaching courses in painting, printmaking, and drawing, Thompson also taught more unusual classes in calligraphy and urban archaeology. Outside Augsburg, Thompson's work is in collections at the Sioux City Art Center, the Minnesota Museum of American Art, the University of St. Thomas, Moorhead City Hall, the Rourke Art Gallery in Moorhead, and the Plains Museum in Fargo.
The reception and artist talk will take place in conjunction with the annual College Art Gallery Collaborative Fall Art Tour on Saturday, October 3. The tour starts at 5 p.m. and the last bus comes at 8 p.m. Nine college art galleries are participating this year and visitors are encouraged to choose one of the two routes to see 5 or 6 total shows.
