History
The Center, a program of Augsburg College, was
founded in 1982 in response to a call by the Lutheran Church for
programs to raise awareness of international issues. This action
served to consolidate and intensify a number of efforts on global
education already initiated at the college. These included January
interim classes in Mexico, an undergraduate semester program in
Mexico and Central America, and a study center established in
Cuernavaca, Mexico.
The Center has grown to encompass a diverse staff of
North Americans, Latin Americans, and Africans working in six
countries – El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Namibia, Nicaragua, and
the United States. In addition to its office in Minneapolis, the
Center maintains study centers in Managua, Nicaragua; Cuernavaca,
Mexico; and Windhoek, Namibia. The Center has developed community
partnerships in its international locations and a range of
individuals and organizations serve as community resources.
