HPE 002/003 – Lifetime Fitness – Yoga (taught only in Namibia)

Instructor: Linda Raven

Required Equipment:  Students will wear comfortable loose fitting exercise clothes which will not restrict their movement in any way.

Catalogue Description: Designed to meet the general education graduation requirement for lifetime fitness.0.0 credit, but will appear on transcript; fulfills a Lifetime Fitness requirement at Augsburg College

Course Competencies:  Students will be able to:

* Understand and apply the underlying philosophy of yoga

* Demonstrate and name basic hatha yoga postures (asanas)

* Demonstrate breathing techniques, relaxation techniques and kinesthetic awareness

* Demonstrate an awareness of skeletal alignment and body mechanics for a safe and intelligent use of the body.

* Increase strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, range of motion and the ability to relax

* Recognize and apply the benefits of an ongoing yoga practice

* Create a personal ongoing home yoga practice

Course Requirements:

* Attendance is required!  Three absences equal no credit. Two tardies equals one absence.

Grading is pass/no credit.

Note: Physical activity is mandatory.  An individual who may have a disability (permanent or temporary) that may affect their ability to participate in this class must inform the instructor. Most postures can be modified for different abilities and body types while still enjoying the benefits of the posture.

Schedule: (11 class sessions of two hours each)

Each class session will include:

* an introductory discussion on a particular aspect of yoga philosophy as outlined below

* breathing (pranayama)

meditation

* hatha yoga (asana practice) including a balanced variety of postures with an emphasis on the type of posture specified below:

There may be some very short reading and handouts associated with some of the yoga philosophy topics.
