Program Syllabi: Nation Building, Globalization, and Decolonizing the Mind
Namibia is a society in transition. Fundamentally, it is in transition from the experience of colonialism to that of independence. Underlying that basic transition, however, are many other transitions—from the legacy of apartheid to the building of a “non-racial society” and democratic rule; from an economy fully dependent on South Africa to multi-lateral economic relationships; from a revolutionary movement with a policy of resistance to a ruling party with a policy of national reconciliation; and many others. The other nations of the region are also in the midst of profound transitions.
This semester explores the processes of the political and social changes occurring in Southern Africa and is organized through the following courses. Students are expected to take four of these courses:
Racism and Resistance in Southern Africa and the U.S. (History 327)
Political and Social Change in Southern Africa (Political Science 353)
Religion and Social Change in Southern Africa (Religion 346)
The Development Process-- Southern Africa (INS 312)
Lifetime Fitness: Yoga (HPE 002/003)
Internship (History/Interdisciplinary Studies/Political Science 399)
All these courses are interrelated and as such their activities are complimentary and interdependent. Students may take either three or four courses.
