Sample Seminars

CGE works with approximately 50 organizations, churches, institutions of higher education, and other groups each year to custom design short-term seminars.

The following are examples of customized short-term travel seminars that CGE has created:

1) Environmental Justice and Sustainable Development: Views from Latin America (Guatemala, sponsored by the University of Montana): This seminar explored the intersection of land conservation, water pollution, indigenous rights, and trade policies by engaging in dialogue with Guatemalan individuals and organizations. Activities included meetings with peasant farmers, discussions with a women's business cooperative, and visits to rainforest regions and environmental preserves.

2) El Salvador: Land of Martyrs (El Salvador, sponsored by New Ways Ministry): This seminar focused on liberation theology and exploration of the lives of martyrs such as Archbishop Romero. Activities included worship at a local church, engagement with a Christian base community, and discussions with human rights activists.

3) Global Search for Justice: Voices of Dissent (South Afirca, sponsored by St. Catherine's University): This seminar looked at historical and current social justice issues in South Africa.  A particular focus was exploring gender, class, and racial disparities with respect to housing, health care, education, and employment opportunities. Participants met with representatives from the Treatment Action Campaign, South Durban Community Environmental Alliance, the Black Sash, and other organizations addressing human and environmental rights issues in South Africa today.

4) Global Adventures in Liberal arts: Ten-week Term Program in Latin America (Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Mexico, sponsored by Butler University): Butler University worked with CGE to design a multi-country study abroad program for their students.  CGE provided infrastructure, program management, access to local experts/lecturers, and other support, while four Butler professors taught courses throughout the semester.
