Internships in Namibia
CGE-Namibia offers part-time internships for academic credit within the context of one of our semester programs or the 10-week summer program.
Participants will gain hands-on experience working with an organization that promotes social change and/or development. The internship course includes attachment with a local organization as well as a seminar. This class time focuses on developing professional skills, and reflecting on the internship experience.
Credit for internships is available in Interdisciplinary Studies, History, or Political Science.
Possible internship placements include attachment at an organization dealing with:
- HIV/AIDs,
- Orphans and vulnerable children,
- Environmental conservation,
- Health promotion,
- Media and journalism,
- Human rights,
- Homeless and underemployed populations,
- Feminist Activism and Gender Issues,
- Domestic Violence,
- Micro-finance and business development and
- Youth and families.
Additional internship opportunities are also available depending on students’ interest and experience.
Semester
Nation Building, Globalization and Decolonizing the Mind is the semester program offered during the fall and spring semesters in Southern Africa and explores the processes of the political and social change occurring in Namibia as it transition from the experience of colonialism and apartheid to independence and democratic rule, seeking to build a “non-racial society.”
In addition to the internship, students will take courses in Political Science, History, Religion or Interdisciplinary Studies. The program includes travel seminars in South Africa, and homestays with families in urban Windhoek, rural northern Namibia, and the Soweto Township in South Africa.
Summer
Social Change and Development in Southern Africa provides students with an opportunity to learn about contemporary and historical issues impacting development and social change in Southern Africa and the efforts to address such issues. Students will learn through course study as well as attachment with a local organization. Internship field placements will provide students hands-on learning opportunities, as well as opportunities for personal and professional development. In addition to the internship, students will take in Interdisciplinary Studies course title "The Development Process in Southern Africa." Participants will also be offered additional opportunities for experiential learning and community engagement through in-country orientations, homestays and travel seminars throughout Namibia.
Internship Examples
In the past, students have had the opportunity to do an internship with an organization that provides support and advocacy for women living with HIV/AIDS. The student have typically been involved with the English literacy component of this project, which allowed the women to feel more confident when talking to medical personnel about their health. The interns have also worked with the women on life skills training and income generation programs.Other student have worked at a school for children who have been left out of the formal education system. Interns working here have the opportuni to assit teachers with their classes, teach some individual lessons, and provide one-on-on tutoring.
Another available internship is with a feminist orgnazation, where students have been able to contribute research and articles for a bimonthly magazine. Internship have also helped to organizat and participate in the Young Feminist Camp.
These are just a few examples, and many more internships are available.
