Sample Travel Seminar Itinerary
Namibia and South Africa

While each Center for Global Education travel seminar is uniquely
designed, the following is a representative sample itinerary of a travel seminar to southern Africa (To Namibia, with programming options in either Cape Town or Johannesburg, South Africa). This sample generally represents the types of encounters you would experience on a trip, as well as the pace of the program. Each trip’s actual itinerary will vary based on program focus, length, timing and local events. More about location and housing in Namibia.

 

Day One 

6:00 pm Depart Atlanta airport for Windhoek, Namibia. 

 

Day Two 

6:00 pm Arrival at Windhoek airport. After going through customs, meet Center staff and transfer to the study center. 
7:30 pm Supper and early to bed (jetlag!). 

 

Day Three 

7:00 am Breakfast. 

8:00 am Introductions, orientation, and overview of the program.
9:30 am Visit the American Cultural Center to view the video, "Katatura" and get an overview of history.
1:00 pm Lunch. 
2:00 pm Driving tour of Katatura, a former black township, and the Windhoek area. 
6:30 pm Dinner at a local restaurant.

 

Day Four 

7:00 am Breakfast. 
8:30 am Participate in a "Katatura Quest," an exercise to learn more about the economic realities of people in Katatura, with guides from the community.  Lunch in the community with the guides. 
2:00 pm Return to the study center and debrief the quest exercise. 
4:00 pm Free time and rest period. 
6:00 pm Cultural dinner with traditional Namibian food with two of the Center's staff representing two of Namibia's eleven ethnic groups. 

 

Day Five 

8:00 am Breakfast. 
9:00 am Information session on "race and identity 101."
10:45 am Meeting with a representative to speak about the effects of globalization on the economy.
12:00 pm Lunch at the Center.
2:30pm Meet with a political officer from the U.S. Embassy. Discuss U.S. interests and commitments in Namibia. 
4:00 pm Brief orientation for homestay and debrief experiences so far. 
5:30pm Get picked up by host families for homestay in Katatura. 
6:30pm Supper with host families.

 

Day Six 

8:00 am Breakfast with host families.
9:30 am  Dialogue with representatives from the SWAPO political party, the group that led the fight for independence, about reconciliation and land reform efforts. 
11:00 am Tour a newspaper written by and sold by homeless people in Windhoek.  Meet the founders and staff and discuss economic challenges.
1:00 pm Lunch at the Center. 
3:00 pm Meet with a representative of an opposition political party. 
5:30 pm Return to host families. 
6:00 pm Dinner and overnight stay with host families.

 

Day Seven 

8:00 am Breakfast with host families.
9:00 am Free day with host families. 
5:00 pm Return to the Center and debrief the homestay experience. 
7:00 pm Dinner. 

 

Day Eight 

7:00 am Breakfast. 
8:30 am Optional service at a local church and an opportunity to meet some members of the congregation. 
12:00 pm Lunch at the Center. 
2:00 pm Depart for Swakopmund, a community on the Atlantic Coast. 
5:00 pm Arrive at the guesthouse. 
6:00 pm Dinner on your own. 

 

Day Nine 

7:00 am Breakfast. 
9:00 am Meet with a representative of the Mayor's office at the municipality building about local politics and land issues.  Take a socio-economic tour of the city and residential areas. 
11:30 pm Guided tour of a rug factory. 
12:30 pm Picnic lunch. 
1:30 pm Free afternoon and dinner on your own. 

 

Day Ten 

7:30am Breakfast. 
8:30 am Depart for Walvis Bay municipality offices.
9:00 am Meet with a representative of the city regarding city planning after apartheid.  
11:00 am Dialogue with staff from a community based AIDS advocacy and support organization about people living with HIV/AIDS and community development projects.
1:00 pm Lunch in Walvis Bay. 
2:30 pm Visit a lagoon to see flamingos in their natural habitat.
3:00 pm Climb up one of the world's largest sand dunes, Dune 7.
4:30 pm Return to Swakopmund.
5:30 pm  Reflection session about experiences in Swakopmund/Walvis Bay
7:00pm Supper on your own. 

 

Day Eleven 

6:00 am Depart for Outjo. 
9:00 am Stop for breakfast at a restaurant in Omaruru.
1:00 pm Lunch and meeting with a women's group in Outjo.
4:00 pm Depart for a lodge in Etosha Pan Game Reserve.
7:00 pm Dinner at the lodge.

 

Day Twelve

6:00 am Wild animal viewing in Etosha.
8:00 am Breakfast.
9:00 am Visit the Okaukuejo Environmental Center and meet with a representative.
12:00 pm Picnic lunch in Etosha.
2:00 pm Visit the Okaukuejo primary school for a cultural dance performance and dialogue about education issues.
7:00 pm Dinner at the lodge.

 

Day Thirteen

7:00 am  Breakfast.
8:00 am  Wild animal viewing; drive to the Halali camp.
12:00 pm  Picnic lunch and swim at the Halali camp.
2:00 pm   Talk by a game warden on racism, environmental protection, and education.
4:00 pm Wild animal viewing back to Okaukuejo.
6:30 pm  Barbeque dinner at the camp.

 

Day Fourteen

7:00 am  Breakfast.
8:00 am  Return to Windhoek.  Lunch on the road.
5:00 pm  Arrive back at the Center.
6:30 pm  Farewell dinner and reflection about time in Namibia.

 

Programming Option in Cape Town, South Africa

 

Day Fifteen

7:00 am  Breakfast.
8:00 am  Depart for the airport.
10:30 am  Flight to Capetown, South Africa.
1:30 pm  Arrival at the guest house and lunch.
3:00 pm  Orientation to South Africa.
6:00 pm  Dinner on your own.

 

Day Sixteen

9:00 am Talk on the history of Cape Town and tour the District 6 Museum, an interactive museum explaining District Six, the area that was originally established as a mixed community of freed slaves, merchants, artisans, laborers and immigrants before the 60,000 inhabitants were forcibly removed in 1966 when the area was declared a white only area.
10:30 am Depart for Khayelitsha township and tour a weaving cooperative that helps to fund community development projects.

12:00 pm Lunch at a bed and breakfast in Khayelitsha run by an entrepreneur who wanted to help visitors understand township life better.

3:00 pm Talk on HIV/AIDS treatment campaigns in South Africa.

6:30 pm Dinner on own Cape Town.

9:00 pm Option visit to a jazz cafe.

 

Day Seventeen

8:00 am  Breakfast.
9:00 am  Visit the Mayibuye Archival Center at the University of Western Cape campus (historically for colored and black students). 
11:00 am  History talk by a professor in the School of Government.
12:30 pm  Lunch at the Victoria and Albert waterfront.
2:30 pm Boat departs for tour of Robben Island, the prison where Nelson Mandela along with other political prisoners were held.
5:30 pm Free time and dinner on own at the Waterfront.
7:30 pm Reflection at the guest house.

 

Day Eighteen

8:00 am  Depart for sight seeing drive around the Cape Peninsula.  Stops at a penguin colony and Cape Point (the southwestern most tip of Africa, where the Atlantic and Indian oceans meet).
12:00 pm  Picnic lunch at Cape Point.
2:00 pm Guided tour of the old slave quarters, dungeon areas and museum in Simons’ Town (community from which the coloreds and blacks were forcefully moved).
4:00 pm  Final reflection at the beach.
8:00 pm  Farewell dinner at the Waterfront.

 

Day Nineteen

9:00 am  Breakfast and final packing.
1:00 pm  Depart for the airport and home.

 

Programming Option in Johannesburg, South Africa

 

Day Fifteen

5:30 am  Breakfast.
6:00 am  Depart for the airport.
7:45 am  Flight to Johannesburg, South Africa.
12:00 pm  Arrival at the guest house and lunch.
1:00 pm  Tour Soweto, including Nelson Mandela's house and the Hector Peterson Museum, honoring the first and youngest victim of the 1976 Soweto violence as well as commemorating the Soweto uprisings.
6:00 pm  Dinner in Soweto.

 

Day Sixteen

8:00 am  Breakfast.
8:30am Overview of the program and hear the life story of the Center's South Africa consultant who lived through the Soweto uprisings.
11:00am Visit an organization that helps survivors and families of the victims of the political conflict of South Africa’s past apartheid’s regime.
1:00 pm  Lunch at a local market
3:00 pm Meeting with a church leader on the progress of South Africa since achieving democracy in 1994.
6:00 pm  Dinner at the guesthouse.

 

Day Seventeen

8:00 am - Drive to Pretoria.
9:00 am Visit the Voortrekker Monument with Museum Quest, a national icon for Afrikaans-speaking South Africans, commemorating the victory of the Boers over the Zulus during the Great Trek.
11:00 am Reflection at base of the monument.
12:30 pm Visit government buildings.
1:30 pm Lunch in Sandton at Nelson Mandela Square.
4:00 pm Return to the guesthouse.
6:00 pm  Dinner at the guesthouse.

 

Day Eighteen

8:00 am Breakfast.
9:00am Visit the Apartheid Museum, exhibiting film footage, photographs, text panels and artifacts illustrating the rise and fall apartheid.
12:00 pm Lunch.
1:30 pm Final reflection of your experience.
4:00 pm  Free time to pack.
6:00 pm  Farewell dinner and theater performance.

 

Day Nineteen

9:00 am  Breakfast and final packing.
1:00 pm  Depart for the airport and home.
