Short-term Travel Seminar to Vietnam

While each Center for Global Education travel seminar is uniquely designed, the following is a representative sample itinerary of a travel seminar to Vietnam. This sample generally represents the types of encounters you would experience on a trip, as well as the pace of the program. Each trip’s actual itinerary will vary based on program focus, length, timing and local events.
 

Day One

Morning Depart North America for Vietnam

 

Day Two

Late Evening  Arrive in Hanoi.  Transfer to hotel.

 

Day Three

8:00 am  Breakfast

9:00 am  Introductions, orientation, and overview of the program.

11:00 am  Welcome by the Secretary General of the Vietnam-USA Society

12:30 pm  Lunch

2:30 pm  Driving tour of Hanoi with a visit to a bank to change money and a walk through the Old Quarter with street market

4:30 pm  Break at the hotel

6:30 pm  Dinner

8:00 pm  Walk by Memorial at Truc Bach Lake where Senator John McCain was shot down before being taken prisoner

 

Day Four

8:00 am  Breakfast

9:30 am  Presentation on history and culture of Vietnam by a professor

12:00 pm  Visit pagodas at West Lake (Tran Quoc, Quan Thanh)

1:00 pm  Lunch on your own in the West Lake area

3:00 pm  Visit Temple of Literature

6:00 pm  Dinner with reflection

 

Day Five

7:00 am  Breakfast

8:30 am  Tour the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, presidential palace, and museum

12:30 pm  Lunch

2:00 pm  Meet with the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial Fund about efforts to clear the countryside from unexploded bombs remaining from the war

4:00 pm  Meet with a peace activist from the US who worked both in North and South Vietnam during the war

6:30 pm  Dinner with the US peace activist and US war veteran

 

Day Six

8:00 am  Breakfast

9:00 am  Free time or optional visit to an art museum

11:30  Meet for lunch

1:00 pm  Lecture about the 29 minority groups in Vietnam with a staff member and tour the Museum of Ethnology

5:00 pm  Water puppet show at the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre

6:30 pm  Dinner

 

Day Seven

8:00 am  Breakfast and reflection

11:00 am  Check out of hotel

11:30 am  Drive to Cuc Phuong National Park with lunch en route

5:30 pm  Check into lodging at Cuc Phuong National Park

7:00 pm  Dinner

 

Day Eight

7:30 am  Breakfast

9:00 am  Tour Primate Rescue Center and Turtle Conservation project

11:30 am  Lunch

1:30 pm  Guided hike within the park

6:30 pm  Dinner

 

Day Nine

8:00 am  Breakfast and reflection

10:00 am  Free time

12:00 pm  Lunch

1:30 pm  Check out of the hotel and depart for Muong Village

3:30 pm  Arrive in Muong Village for overnight homestays.  Settle into homes and tour the village

6:30 pm  Dinner

8:00 pm  Muong cultural performance

9:30 pm  Overnight in large groups with the families

 

Day Ten

7:30 am  Breakfast

8:30 am  Conversation with several village members

10:30 am   Depart village

12:00 pm  Lunch en route

1:30 pm  Check into hotel in Van Long and free time

6:00 pm   Reflection

7:00 pm   Dinner at hotel

 

Day Eleven

8:00 am  Breakfast

9:30 am  Boat ride in Van Long Reserve

12:00 pm  Lunch

1:30 pm  Depart for Halong Bay

6:30 pm  Dinner and overnight at a hotel in Halong Bay

 

Day Twelve

8:00 am  Breakfast

10:00 am  Take private boat through Halong Bay, stopping to swim, visiting caves, and staying overnight on it

 

Day Thirteen

9:00 am  Return to Halong Bay

9:30 am  Depart for Hanoi

10:30 pm  Meet with factory workers near Haiphong, a newly industrial area with assembly plants for many major companies

1:00 pm  Lunch at a craft center providing vocational training for disabled persons

6:00 pm  Check into hotel in Hanoi

6:30 pm  Dinner on your own

 

Day Fourteen

8:00 am  Breakfast

9:30 am  Meet with Buddhist students (monks and a nun) at a pagoda to discuss their work and life

11:00 am   Visit Friendship Village to learn about their work with veterans and children affected by Dioxin/Agent Orange: Meet with Director, eat lunch, and visit to classrooms and workshops

3:00 pm  Visit to the National Hospital of Traditional Medicine and meet with Director and others to discuss issues related to health and HIV/AIDS

5:00 pm  Reflection

6:00 pm   Dinner

 

Day Fifteen

7:30 am  Breakfast

9:00 am  “Economics and Globalization” lecture by a senior economist with the Vietnamese government

10:15 am  Speak with a staff member from an international development organization

12:30 pm  Lunch

2:00 pm  Presentation on Vietnamese traditional music and instruments with a local musician

4:00 pm  Meet with the representatives from the Political and Economic Sections of the U.S Embassy

6:00 pm  Dinner

 

Day Sixteen

7:00 am  Breakfast

8:00 am  Depart for airport

10:00 am  Fly to Ho Chi Minh City

12:00 pm  Arrival and check into the hotel

1:00 pm  Lunch

2:00 pm  Guided tour of the city

7:00 pm  Dinner

 

Day Seventeen

7:00 am  Breakfast

8:30 am  Tour an English language training center by the Vietnam-US Society

10:30 am  Meet with an organization working on HIV/AIDS issues

12:00 pm  Lunch

2:00 pm  Tour the War Remnants Museum

4:00 pm  Reflection

6:00 pm  Dinner

 

Day Eighteen

7:00 am  Breakfast

8:00 am  Depart for tour of the Mekong Delta, including visiting a floating market

6:00 pm  Return from the Mekong Delta

7:00 pm  Dinner

 

Day Nineteen

8:00 am  Breakfast

9:00 am  Free time for shopping or packing

12:00 pm  Lunch on your own

4:00 pm  Final reflection

6:30 pm  Dinner

9:00 pm  Depart for the airport

11:50 pm  Depart for North America

2:00 pm  Arrive in North America
