Social Change in Central America: Exploring Peace, Justice and Community Engagement (Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua - Fall or Spring Semester)

[Formerly titled Sustainable Development and Social Change in Central America]

This multi-country semester study abroad program (Guatemala, El Salvador, and Nicaragua) is defined by an experiential methodology and unique approach to community engagement.  Students develop Spanish language skills through one-on-one Spanish courses and language practicum.  They are immersed in the lives of homestay families, urban and rural communities, and learn with and from grassroots  community organizations dedicated to work on issues related to conflict, foreign policy, gender, and economic and social justice.  The unique histories and lives of the people not only inspire, but also challenge students to think about their role as agents of change.

History, Culture, and Politics of Cuba

li Spend a semester in a aplace you never thought possible - Cuba! Be one of few to experience the rich social, poliitical, and cultural traditions of this island nation.  The program is based in Havana and utilizes a social justice framework to explore key questions around citizenship, democracy, electoral processes, wealth equity, race, gender, and class.  The questions unfold in a particular historical context, which has been impacted by an often contentious relationship with the US government and also grounded in nationalism built on foundations of sovereignty and equity.
