Semester Program: Nation Building, Globalization, and

Decolonizing the Mind

 

Racism and Resistance in Southern Africa and the U.S.: Struggles Against Colonialism, Apartheid and Segregation  (History 327)   -required-

  • Explore some of the many historical parallels of the development of racism in the white supremacist regimes of southern Africa and in the U.S.

  • Examine the strategies of resistance used by the various anti-apartheid and democratic movements in southern Africa and the civil rights movement in the United States

  • Critically examine successes and limitations of the formal political victories over apartheid and racism and the lingering economic, social, political and psychological effects of racism. 

The Development Process - Southern Africa
(Interdisciplinary Studies 312) 

  • Reflect critically on issues of development, globalization, education, governance, human rights and HIV/AIDS.

  • Study basic theories of development as well as particular strategies of development being implemented in Namibia and South Africa. 

Political and Social Change in Namibia: A Comparative Perspective 

(Political Science 353)

  • Explore the process of political and social change in Southern Africa during the second half of this century

  • Examine the impact of apartheid on social and political movements. 

  • Compare Namibia's social and political structures to those of South Africa and Zimbabwe. 

Religion and Social Change in Southern Africa

(Religion 346) 

  • Learn about the changing role of religion in southern Africa before and after colonialism. 

  • Discuss how the African traditional religions and Christianity were involved in the liberation struggle.

  • Learn about African traditional religions and the results of them meeting with Christianity.

Internship 
(History, Interdisciplinary Studies or History 399) 

  • A limited number of internships will be available to provide students with the opportunity to gain hands-on work experience in a development agency. (Volunteer opportunities are available for students who do not need credit.)

Independent Study Seminar

(History, Interdisciplinary Studies or History 499)

  • Design a proposal to independently explore a topic of interest to you.

  • If your proposal is approved, you will collaborate with an instructor who will guide your independent study.

  • Get a head start on your senior thesis, capstone project, or other significant project.
