“I felt that openly queer staff and the relationship students have with the staff creates an environment where I feel accepted after coming from a very conservative community and having to struggle and feel defensive a lot.  That has changed at my university in the States, but still I think that I have a feel for spaces that are accepting -- and I felt more at ease with my sexuality and with students who don't identify as queer.”

Study in Cuernavaca, Mexico
on a LGBT friendly program!

Only a 90-minute drive south of Mexico City, Cuernavaca offers more than eternal spring. Because of its progressive atmosphere, Cuernavaca has held three Pride marches and currently hosts various organizations dedicated to promoting queer rights; local activists fighting for the passage of a new domestic partnership law in the state of Morelos; several gay and lesbian bars and nightclubs; and a queer-friendly community!

This is an exciting time to study in Mexico, and celebrate the achievements of the fight for queer rights, including new laws that enable same-sex civil unions and give LGBT couples, as well unmarried heterosexual couples, the right to make medical decisions for their partners and list them as beneficiaries of pensions and inheritances.

“This program is definitely a safe space for LGBTQ students. My participation in this program was very important for me, not only in my academic development, but in my personal development.  Because the program and the staff were so queer-friendly and queer-positive, I left the program feeling more comfortable with my identity as queer than I felt when I first came to the program. I am thankful that I was able to have such a positive, affirming experience studying abroad with CGE.”
