Internship for Academic Credit in Mexico
CGE-Mexico offers semester-long internships for
academic credit at various local organizations,
businesses and schools in Cuernavaca.
Students may apply for an internship that
involves not only 100-120 hours of work experience and/or
participant observation in a Mexican organization but also
participate in a seminar that explores cultural issues,
organizational analysis and personal and professional
development through class discussions and written and oral
assignments. *Students have interned in organizations focusing
on the following areas:
*All placements are made with agencies that have
expressed a need for and interest in receiving a student.
Please note that these areas are not all-inclusive and are
subject to change by semester, as some sites may not be
available or others may have expressed a stronger need. In
order to model an ongoing relationship of reciprocity, we place
the needs of the agencies over the needs of the students.
What past interns have said about their
internship in Mexico:
-
“I’m really appreciative of the
information and resources I’ve had access to through this
internship. I feel that that’s one way in which this
experience stood out from those that the other students this
semester seemed to have. I’m doing something that really
engages me through its connections to my academic interests
and getting the chance to get new perspectives on themes
I’ve been thinking about throughout my time in college.”
–Wesleyan University student
-
“The experience I gained working at my
internship were welcomed, novel, and challenging. They will
continue to weigh in my mind as I more forward with my
academic, professional, and personal life.”
–Augsburg College student
-
“I will forever look back on my
internship experience as having an abundance of frustrating
times, and numerous disappointments, but in the end, being a
more valuable and significant experience than I would have
ever imagined. I don’t think I’ve ever been put in an
experience that sent me as far out of my comfort zone as
this did; forcing me to muster up all my courage,
self-confidence, and creativity while teaching in a foreign
language. For this, I am incredibly thankful for this very
worthwhile, and ultimately life changing experience.”
–Denison University student
-
“I think I got more out of my internship
than I gave, but I think I also left (the internship) with
some useful information and documents. In a way though, I
think my just having been there, observing, will end up
helping the organization. Everything at (the site) happens
organically, through word of mouth, through one interested
person telling stories to another. I certainly intend to be
one of those people – to talk back in my world of scientists
and spread the word that there are other ways of doing
things.” –Wesleyan University student
What past internship supervisors have said about
working with CGE interns:
-
“It was a great experience for me. (The
intern) helped with many things, really more than I expected
him to. Not only am I happy with what he did at the
organization but really with his spirit of collaboration.
Even when I thought things were fine, (the intern) went
beyond my expectations and gave a lot of himself.”
–Internship supervisor of an NGO working with environmental
alternative technology
-
“It is marvellous to know that there are
schools that are interested in institutional collaboration,
but it is even greater to know that there are women,
independent of their nationality, who continue to build
bridges in order to make the world better.” –Internship
supervisor of an NGO working on sexual and reproductive
rights
-
“Personally, I was very happy with the
support of (the intern). It was a very valuable experience
and I am very appreciative of her time with us. I only with
she could have stayed with us for more time!”
–Internship supervisor at local middle school
