Crossing Borders:
Gender and Social Change in Mesoamerica
(Fall term)

Study the dynamics of social, economic, political and cultural change in Mexico and Central America with a focus on gender and women's perspectives. The program opens with a week-long orientation at the U.S.-Mexico border, and includes homestays, internships and independent research opportunities, intensive Spanish language instruction, and a two-week travel seminar to El Salvador. Engaging our Communities (Spring term)

Explore issues of migration, immigration, and globalization. This is an ideal program for students who are interested in working with Spanish-speaking populations in the United States, as it includes intensive Spanish language classes, an internship or independent research opportunity, and courses that help students understand the connections between globalization and migration and learn from diverse communities that are organizing for positive social change around issues of race, ethnicity, socio-economic class, gender, sexuality, economics, and the environment. Social Work in a
Latin American Context 
(Spring term)

Created jointly by a collaboration of CSWE-accredited social work programs to satisfy the curriculum requirements for the BSW degree, this program aims to develop cross-culturally competent, ethical social work professionals with a global perspective by providing a semester of transformative, experiential learning focused on social and economic justice. In addition to intensive language instruction, the program includes family stays and the opportunity to fulfill a social work field placement requirement. More...

 

Internship Opportunities based in Cuernavaca, Mexico

CGE- Mexico offers part-time internships for academic credit (4 semester hours) within the context of one of our semester programs or full-time internships for J-term, summer, semester, or a full year. Full-time internships can be completed for academic credit or not, depending upon the needs of the applicants, and are open to gap year students, recent college graduates, and graduate students, as well as undergraduate students.

 

Summer Programs

Choose from three different program tracks:

 

Track A: Gender, Art and Social Change

  • Course #1:  “The Legacy of Frida Kahlo: Gender, Sexuality, Politics and the Arts.” (Women’s Studies 281/481)  Explore the lives of Mexican women from the beginning of the 20th century, when women Soldaderas participated in the Mexican Revolution, to the present day when a wide variety of women’s groups and LGBTQ organizations have embraced artist Frida Kahlo as a symbol of women’s struggles for revolutionary change.  Learn about gender, sexuality, politics and the arts in contemporary Mexico.  The course will be taught in English, and translation will be provided for guest speakers.

  • Course #2:  An intensive Spanish course

Track B: Spanish Language and Culture

Choose two of the 17 Spanish courses offered.This track is ideal for Spanish majors or minors. Applicants for this track should have already taken the equivalent of SPA 211 (Intermediate Spanish I)

 

Track C: Academic Internship and Independent Research

This track is ideal for bilingual students or advanced Spanish students who have prior experience in Latin America.

  • Course #1:  Academic Internship. Gain 100 hours of experience working in Mexico and participate in a weekly seminar exploring cultural issues, organizational analysis, and personal development.  Credit available in History, Interdisciplinary Studies, Political Science, Spanish, Religion and Women’s Studies.

  • Course #2:  Independent Study.  Conduct independent research on a topic related to your internship. Get a head start on your senior thesis or write a paper to present at an academic or professional conference.

Nation Building, Globalization
and Decolonizing the Mind
(Either Fall or Spring Semester)

Explore the processes of the political and social change occurring in Namibia as it transition from the experience of colonialism and apartheid to independence and democratic rule, seeking to build a “non-racial society.” The program begins and ends with seminars in South Africa, includes family stays in Johannesburg, Windhoek, and rural Namibia, and opportunities for hands-on experience through a variety of internship placements. Social Change and Development in Southern Africa

Summer Session: June 1 - August 9, 2009

Social Change and Development in Southern Africa provides students with an opportunity to learn about contemporary and historical issues impacting development and social change in Southern Africa and the efforts to address such issues. Students will learn through course study as well as attachment with a local organization. Internship field placements will provide students hands-on learning opportunities, as well as opportunities for personal and professional development. Participants will also be offered additional opportunities for experiential learning and community engagement through in-country orientations, homestays and travel seminars throughout Namibia.

 


 

Based in Central America
 

Sustainable Development and Social Change
in Central America
(Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua - Fall or Spring Semester)

Explore the root causes of conflict and the processes of social change in Central America, examine the theory and practice of liberation theology and church-related social movements, and trace gender, class and racial conflict within different historical periods The program includes intensive language study, and family stays in Guatemala and Nicaragua. Spanish Language and Mayan Spirituality

(Guatemala - Summer Session I: May 31-July 3, 2009)

Based in Antigua, Guatemala. Learn about the complex relationship that exists between indigenous spiritualities and Roman Catholicism in Mesoamerica The influence of Mayan spirituality on Latin American societies.
