Why the Center for
Global Education (CGE) at Augsburg College?
With so many different study abroad programs from
which to choose in Mexico and Central America, why choose us?
Here's what makes us different from other programs:
Strong local community connections
-
CGE was established in Mexico in 1979 and has
been an integral part of the local community since then.
-
The staff at the school have developed and
maintained strong connections to different community
organizations and local leaders over the years. These contacts
allow staff members to provide CGE students with rich
experiential opportunities through speakers and excursions.
-
CGE’s
educational philosophy is based on methodologies developed
by Paulo Freire and John Dewey, among others. Students have the
opportunity to engage in dialogue with people from many
different sectors of Mexican society.
-
The semester programs at CGE in Mexico have won
several national awards in the U.S., including the National
Society for Experiential Education 2003 Program of the Year
Award and a 2006 Partners in International Social Work Award
from the Council for Social Work Education.
Exciting Internship opportunities
-
CGE offers diverse
internship
opportunities. An
on-site staff member will help you set up an internship that
meets your school’s course and hour requirements, and that fits
with your personal interests or area(s) of study. The
internship coordinator will be available throughout the semester
for individualized student supervision and guidance, as well as
for seminar sessions with other students.
-
CGE places students with respected community
organizations, businesses and government agencies with which it
has developed a relationship over the years.
-
Social work semester students will receive
supervision from a social work professor from the U.S. while in
their internship placements.
-
Full-time summer, semester-long, and year-long
internships are also available.
Socially responsible and eco-friendly school
-
CGE is committed to being a socially and
environmentally responsible institution. The school buys
sustainable, local, organic and fair trade food and other items as
much as possible.
-
All staff members are paid a fair living wage and
receive excellent benefits, thus contributing to staff longevity,
experience and commitment.
-
CGE Mexico follows practices such as recycling and
composting, and the guest house includes several ecological dry
toilets.
-
CGE Mexico cooks are trained in vegetarian and vegan
cooking, and often use fresh herbs grown in the guest house garden.
-
Reduce your carbon footprint in the world by
studying in a locale close to the US, yet one that offers rich
learning opportunities.
Central location
-
Live and study in guest houses in Cuernavaca—just a
10-15 minute walk or an inexpensive taxi ride away from the downtown
area!
-
The Universal language school, which has a small
swimming pool and racquetball court, is conveniently located on the
same street as the CGE houses.
-
Also located on the same street are a bakery, a
recycling center, a laundromat, an internet café, four small grocery
stores, two stationery stores, a Pentecostal Church and a Catholic
Church.
-
The school is also located a short distance from
fabulous restaurants, museums, and a beautiful waterfall.

Reasonable program cost
-
The cost of semester programs and short-term travel
seminars at CGE is
-
affordable and includes expenses such as food,
lodging, travel health insurance, group travel, school tuition,
field trips and excursions, internet and internet phone (including a
direct line to Minneapolis from which you can make free calls to the
U.S.), and on-site resident staff. No hidden costs!
-
Studying in Mexico is less expensive than studying
in other places such as Europe. Get more for your money as you
enjoy more freedom for personal travel and entertainment!
-
For Augsburg students, the cost of studying at CGE
in Mexico is the same price as a semester of tuition on-campus, and
airfare is included!
Supportive living-learning community
At CGE, you’re not just another number! Each
student receives individualized attention throughout the semester,
and one-on-one advising from professors and other staff.
CGE staff care about students’ needs and makes a
conscious effort to accommodate each student’s needs as much as
possible.
CGE Mexico is a supportive place for LGBT students,
as well as students from diverse ethnic, class & religious
backgrounds.
On-site resident assistants/interns live with
students and work with them to create a friendly and mutually
supportive “living-learning community”, in which each student has
the opportunity to voice his or her own opinions while feeling
accepted. This is consistent with CGE’s educational philosophy,
which values personal experiences and recognizes that education
involves questioning oneself and the world.
Knowledgeable and committed staff
Permanent on-site faculty and staff members from the
Canada, Mexico, and the United States are bilingual, friendly,
accessible, and dedicated to your learning experience. Staff
members have hands-on experience in the international arena and are
knowledgeable about Mexico.
Staff members at CGE pay close attention to student
safety. CGE provides students a thorough safety orientation and a
24-hour on-call emergency service.
Cooking, cleaning, administrative and maintenance
staff at the CGE Mexico offices and program houses are friendly and
helpful, as well as excellent community resources.
